Walking to Work

According to reports, the following cities are the 10 “Most Walkable” Cities:
- San Francisco
- New York City
- Boston
- Chicago
- Philadelphia
- Seattle
- Washington, DC
- Long Beach
- Los Angeles
- Portland
Not everyone can just pick and move to a more “walkable” city in order to go green. So, as a business owner or professional, what can you do to make the city where you live more walkable?
- Drive safely. When the roads are safer, more people, especially children, will walk. So, when you do have to get into your car, make sure you’re following the rules of the road.
- Arrange carpools with other nearby offices. Carpools don’t have to be just with workers within one company. Get together with other companies in a walkable distance and arrange carpools. As a business owner, compromise on shifts so that employees who want to carpool have the same shift hours as employees of nearby companies.
- Help new employees find near-by apartments. When you hire someone new, have a program set up to help them find an affordable apartment within walking distance.
Remember, the little stuff counts. Pick up litter that you see (and don’t do it yourself!), complain to your local police and government if there are areas where you feel unsafe while walking, and give your employees order-in lunch options so not everyone has to drive to get food. What are you doing to make your city more walkable?
