Want to ask more better questions?

December 4, 2008 by Phil Gerbyshak

Do you want to ask more questions, better questions, questions that get good answers from your team?

Go download the free ebook Asking Questions for a Change, courtesy of Joanna Young.

Don’t think questions are important to managers?  Here’s a pertinent quote that might change your mind.

“One who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; one who does not ask a question remains a fool forever.” – Chinese proverb

I live in a culture where we value smart questions. Nothing beats asking the right questions with the right people in the room.

  2. Lisa Gates says:

Phil, I loved the headline so much I actually did something I thought only old people do: guffawed. Joanna’s ebook sounds fabulous. My biz partner and I actually have two policies along these lines…that we ask at least 2 “stupid” questions every day, and we always remain “curioser and curioser.”

  3. Joanna Young says:

Thanks for the mention of the e-book Phil.

    Where’d we be without questions?

Great quote by the way, that’s a keeper.

  4. Jean Murray says:

I loved the headline. And the quote. If there is no such thing as a dumb question, why do people feel intimidated and avoid answering questions? Thanks for passing along the e-book, Phil.

  5. Rob Hooft says:

The Chinese proverb is interesting since it is coming from an eastern culture where asking questions is considered an insult for the teacher or speaker. The need to ask a question is obvious evidence that the speaker did not make himself clear….

  6. Asking questions is extremely important when managing a team. Also, it is much easier to ask someone then to sit and try to determine, what they’ve done, how they’ve done it, and why they done it. There’s no such a thing as a stupid question! Okay, truly sometimes there are stupid questions, but if you’re an intelligent individual and you think about your question before you ask it, then you should be okay.
