As a new school year approaches and college freshman take their first steps onto campuses around the country, it is a time of reflection. And included in those reflections are often considerations about what major will offer the best chance to earn money . While they say you should do something you love, many people have been made painfully aware — thanks to the recession — of the importance of having a moneymaker.

CNN Money has a list of the top 15 earning degrees . Better sharpen your math skills:

It is clear that engineering is in high demand. And, because many of the engineering jobs listed here require some sort of specialized skill and on-site presence, it also makes them somewhat recession proof . Just something to consider as everyone heads back to school.

  1. We need more engineers, and fewer lawyers, Wall Street MBAs and politicians. Engineers have the most potential of almost any profession to improve the quality of life through clean energy technology, etc.
