Warner considers retirement in Arizona

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Kurt Warner contemplating?

Kurt WarnerKurt Warner, who preceded Mark Bulger in St. Louis, Eli Manning in New York, and now Matt Leinart in Arizona, is considering retiring at the end of the season. The guy can’t catch a break. Hard to believe there is not a lot of football left in his arm. Besides, as good as Matt Leinart has looked, he is still a rookie.

Actually, a lot of Kurt’s problems will become Matt’s problems. Namely, no offensive line. Ask Edgerrin James how fun it is to have Arizona’s line instead of the Colt line blocking for him.

You know, Kurt had to be excited coming into the season, with… Edgerrin James giving them a legitimate running threat, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin giving them receivers to throw to, and a new stadium packed with rabid fans.

Now five games in, they are 1 and 4, not blocking, last in the division, not scoring, not playing great D, and Kurt himself has not done well. Meanwhile, James is only averaging 3.1 yards per carry and Larry Fitzgerald is having the deadly hamstring problem.

The topper, of course, is that Kurt once again finds himself in an organization that is looking at the next guy, Matt Leinart. After a while, it is more than a once great quarterback can take.

He is under contract with Arizona through the 2008 season. The team likely wants to keep him as the backup to Matt Leinart, but Warner doesn’t know if that is what he wants. “I really don’t know if I could be comfortable as a backup quarterback or if I’d go crazy in that role,” Warner said. He could try to latch on with another team if Arizona releases him, but that isn’t likely. Warner’s contract is manageable and the Cardinals don’t seem likely to let him go. source

NFL Football Fan Question Squib thinks that Matt is not ready, but Kurt would be facing the inevitable anyway. Maybe time to look for another team? Should Kurt be starting the rest of the season?
