Washington Technology – Not So Much

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted here. I’ve been immersed in some challenging projects for a few clients including the mothership, b5media. For those of you who don’t know me personally or through the other blogs I write, you might be interested to know that I work for the second largest government information technology service provider in the United States. Come on… do your homework. You’ll figure it out! :-)

Needless to say, when I surfed over to Washington Technology today, I spent a good amount of time looking at which major contracts had been awarded to which companies, which behemoth snarfed down a smaller company in the acquisition juggernaut.

I am in a unique position. I am stuck in between two worlds. On one hand, I am, through this blog and other means, connected at the waist with the world of emerging tech. I keep my finger on the pulse of Silicon Valley and in general have a forward-thinking mindset.

On the flip side, the hand that feeds me is what I call “old tech”. I dont speak solely of the corporation I work for. I speak for all the major contractors. It is a monolithic service industry that plays more politics than doing anything new. Instead of inventing the next generation solution, we play “Cisco partner” or in some other way grab on the coat tails of the real tech companies.

We aren’t leaders, though we like to call ourselves that. There is no innovation. We are followers, like the rest of the world. Followers with marketers.
