We didn’t start the Viral

Successful content that spreads is not the norm, it takes something a little special. Cakke has put together a great video of many of the successes over the last few years – how many did you see?

What’s interesting from a brand perspective is how few of these are brand related, done by companies. Microsoft got 3 in the list – a giveaway and 2 from Halo, with I Love Bees and Master Chief. Pokeman and Mario continue the game theme. On the entertainment side you have OKGo, Borat, Snakes on a Plane, Brokeback Mountain and The Simpsons. Burger King has 2 mentiones with the King and Subservient Chicken. On consumer goods side I count 3 – Guinness Hands, Will it Blend and Sony Bravia. I’m sure there’s a lot that were missed, but these obviously caught the editors eyes. THey were still outnumberd by stuff done by everyone else though, not by brands. Any favourites you think that were missed?

actually, halo got 3 references, just before the first chorus they show my face and say ‘halo’, it was a part of the halo 3 viral marketing campaign dubbed ‘iris’, it was to halo 3 what ‘i love bees’ was to halo 2, i was accidentally caught up in it, if anyone is interested in one story about how things like this can get out of hand, there is an article and interview on the seventh column website
