Tune in right here if you don’t get the Versus channel as I’ll be updating the televised portion of tonight’s WEC 39 results as they happen. That’s starting at 9pm EST.
Jens Pulver is guest commentary for tonight’s WEC 39 on Versus. Pulver did a good job commentating through the evening and it was nice to hear someone besides Frank Mir.
Rob McCullough Vs. Marcus Hicks
Round 1: Both fighters are starting off very cautious . Almost a minute goes by before any real strikes are thrown. Hicks locks up with Rob against the cage. Ref breaks it up after action lacks for too long. McCullough lands some light punches but nothing damaging at all. The crowd is booing. Hicks is trying to work his way in and locks up again. McCullough is working a lot of knees to Hick’s thighs but the ref breaks it up again. Hicks is throwing hard punches but not connecting hard enough to damage. Rob trying to counter with leg kicks. End of round 1.
Round 2: Starts similar to round one, with caution. Hicks drops McCullough with a punch . As He tries to get to his feet, Hicks locks on a guillotine with Robs arm in. Rob breaks free and reverses the mount and attempts some ground and pound. Fighters get back to their feet and McCullough catches a kick to the groin. A brief break and they are back at it. Fighters lock up with Hicks against the cage. They’re off the cage and McCullough is throwing some good kicks while Hicks is trying for body punches. Hicks is taking a lot of punches but doesn’t look hurt. End of Round 2.
Final Round: Again, a cautious start. A minute and a half in and nothing has really happened. Hicks lands a good, stiff left jab but It doesn’t phase Rob. Ref threatens to call a no contest if they don’t engage. Nothing really happens and that ends round 3.
This fight was slow and there was very little contact aside from some locking up against the cage. The decision goes to the judges and they call it; 29/29, 30/27, 29/28. Winner by majority decision: Rob McCullough. What a boring start to the evenings events and the crowd agrees with boos. I hope the next fight is better.
Jose Aldo Vs. Chris Mickle
Round 1: Both fighters comes out aggressive. Aldo looks a little more collected. Mickle is trying to throw punches but sticking his chin way out there with his reach. Jose Aldo catches Mickle with a knee but it doesn’t do much damage. Aldo backs Mickle up against the cage and starts unloading combo punches on him as Mickle tried to cover. The ref stops the fight. A much shorter fight but I’d rather see 3 minutes of semi-intense action that 15 minutes of dancing around in circles. Jose Aldo wins at 1:39 by Ref Stoppage TKO due to strikes.
They had time so they televise Demacio Page’s 18 second knockout over Marcos Galvao.
Ricardo Lamas Vs. Bart Palaszewski
Round 1: Bart is pushing in and obviously wants to make things happen early. Bart goes for a leg kick and Lamas takes him to the ground. Bart is going for a leg triangle but Ricardo slips it off and comes down with a stiff right. Ricardo tries something weird and Bart gets back to his feet and they’re locked up against the cage. It goes back to the ground. Bart tries to be defensive on his back and Lamas opens up with a flurry of punches. Pal gets back to his feet and start unloading come combos as the buzzer sounds. End of Round 1.
Round 2: Starts off with a lot of energy and it’s quite obvious that lamas wants to keep this on the ground. They lock up against the cage. Bart wants to break free and throw some punches but Lamas is keeping it close. Crowd starts to boo. Lamas is trying to clime on the back of Bart. Bart is now on his back and taking a lot of punches. Bart is back on his feet with only seconds left in round 2.
Final Round: Lamas catches Pal. early with a kick to the groin. Bart is trying to get some good strikes in but Lamas takes him to the ground. Lamas is keeping him to the ground but not doing any damage. Lamas scores some punches and Bart keeps trying to go for unsuccessful Kimura’s. Bart is back to his feet but the third round ends.
Winner by Unanimous decision: Ricardo lamas
Main Event: Mike Brown Vs. Leonard Garcia
Let the nipple tweaking ensue…Leonard Garcia looked like he was in better shape when he fought Jens Pulver. We’ll have to see how he does. Mike Brown looks like he’s in great condition. This should be interesting.
Round 1: Mike brown lands a hard one, stunning Garcia and goes for ground and pound. MIke brown takes Garcia’s back and almost chokes him out. MIke brown works him on the ground some more but Garcia is tough. Garcia is cut Quickly. Mike brown finally gets him in an arm triangle and Garcia tries to deliver some punches to the body but ends up tapping out. Mike Brown barely broke a sweat and successfully defended his Featherweight title in the first round.
Mike Brown wins by submission (Arm triangle) at 1:57 of round 1.
Mike Brown…is no punk! All the people that said he got lucky might have been half right but he just proved that he’s not going to defeated easily.
Leonard Garcia apologizes to Texas and says that Brown caught him with a shot and he tried to recover. Yeah, he caught him but he worked him to. Leonard is a great fighter but he kind of sounded as if he as discrediting Brown a bit. Get back in line and improve your game.
Mike brown drops half of an F-Bomb and gives Garcia a lot of credit. They talk about Faber while he sits at ringside and I’m sure we’ll see Brown Vs. Faber 2 at WEC 41 or 42.
