Weekend Pigskin Roundup

iggles.jpg-The Eagles offensive explosion might very well mean that we’ll see more of those hideous throwbacks, which will likely cause acid flashbacks for the hallucinogenic folk who went to Michigan during the 60s. Those weird blue and yellow winged helmets – and the bizarre sideline hats – will haunt my dreams.

-Speaking of the Eagles, it was good to see that Kevin Curtis overcame the stigma of being a white wide receiver to have a career game. Sometimes it can just be so rough for white players in traditionally black positions. The media and fans can just be so harsh sometimes.

- Green Bay is 3-0, which coupled with all this OJ stuff is really starting to make me feel like this is the nineties again.

- Texas Tech’s quarterback Graham Harrell threw for 646 yards and 5 touchdowns, Louisville’s quarterback Brian Brohm threw for 555 and 4. Neither of their teams won. Remember, it’s important to tackle.

-Michigan beat Penn State. Considering how sorry the Big Ten looks this (see: every) year, Michigan has a shot to win the conference and be in a BCS bowl. This is flabbergasting, uplifting, and disappointing at the same time.

- The Giants gave the game away less successfully than the Redskins did, improved to 1-2.

- Notre Dame is 0-4, but they scored an offensive touchdown. I’m holding out hope that this might be the first year Navy beats the Irish since Roger Staubach was the Midshipmen’s quarterback.

-  Dennis Erickson has taken his 4th college team to the top 25, will soon take his 4th college team to probation.

- The Chicago Bears are not good. This is a scientific fact. Do not expect them to turn the season around.

-And in fictional High School football news, Bill Simmons gave an ultimately underwhelming endorsement of Friday Night Lights last week. (Today, in print…I guess.) I’ll say this again: as someone who was very vocally trying to rally support for Arrested Development, it is not very helpful to ask people to watch a show so it won’t get canceled. That’s not why people watch shows. We AD fans came off like jerks because we were blaming people, instead of just saying, hey, this show is freaking hilarious, you would enjoy it. (And you still would. Buy the DVDs.) Simmons kind of split the difference, saying that he thought (Yup, these are) his readers would like it, but also implying that it’s getting canceled because of American Idol. So, I’ll say this about Friday Night Lights. It is very, very good and absurdly entertaining. It’s moved to Friday night, which is both logical and damning. I’ll be TiVoing it, I recommend you do the same. As Simmons points out, the episodes from last year are available online in their entirety for free. Since it will be a new football season, it might not even be too necessary to watch all of last television season.
