‘Weighing in’ on Mayweather vs. Marquez

I was a bit confused yesterday when Floyd Mayweather Jr. weighed in over the contracted weight limit of 144 pounds for tonight’s welterweight fight (HBO PPV) against Juan Manuel Marquez. JMM hopped on the scale first at 142 (two pounds under the limit). But Floyd was at 146. So what gives? Well, Keith Kizer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission confirmed that the contracted weight was changed (renegotiated) yesterday morning from 144 to 147. In return for his agreement, JMM received more money—substantially more money according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

I’m wondering if Floyd never intended to make weight and figured he would just pay off JMM for the difference. It’s a bizarre and interesting situation. And unfortunately a disturbing trend to pay off opponents instead of meeting your contractual obligations. I mean, it’s only a difference of a couple pounds but an agreement is an agreement. Or at least it should be.
