Germany’s Matthias Steiner is rightly the “Strongest Man in the World,” having won the super-heavyweight (105kg) Olympic weightlifting competition on Tuesday for the Gold Medal. He heaved an incredible 461kg (1016.3 lbs) and lifted 258kg (568.8 lbs) in the clean and jerk, besting Russian Eugeni Chigishev, the Silver Medalist, and Latvia’s Viktors Scerbaiths, the current world champion.
At the medal ceremony, Steiner took out a picture of his wife Susanna, who died in 2007 in a car accident. Said Steiner, “I thought of her before the competition. I won this for her, for friends and family. But mostly for her.”
