I thought it was about time to show you guys where I work.
This is Fitness Together in Newcastle, WA.

Fitness Together provides one on one, private personal training. Sessions are by appointment only, so its not like a gym where anyone can just come in and workout whenever they want. This eliminates the intimidation factor of a gym, and enables we trainers to provide completely indivdualized attention to each and every client.

In the front, we have three cardio machines: a treadmill, elliptical and recumbent bike. This is where clients warm up before their session, do cardio intervals during their sessions, and perform their cardiovascular program after their sessions. The music in the studio is client’s choice via Pandora, and they have complete control of the TV station they watch.
There are two identical suites, fully stocked with all the equipment needed for each session:

- A functional trainer (the big cable machine in the center)
- Dumbbell rack
- Stability balls
- Bosu
- Resistance bands
- Kettlebells
- Blocks
- Barbell and weights
- Medicine balls
- Half cage
- Leg press machine

We don’t have a lot of machines, because our main focus is functional training, or training your body in the way it was designed to move to reduce injury and maximize results, as more muscle groups are engaged throughout the workout.
I wouldn’t work any other place. I love it. Its one of the biggest franchises in the world, and for good reason.
If you are thinking of becoming a personal trainer, I would highly recommend looking for a job at Fitness Together. At FT, your primary responsibility it to train. In box gyms, you’re selling, selling, selling. You can’t give your clients the attention they deserve because you have to move onto the next sell to make sure you get paid. At FT, your clients are handed to you, so your main concern is helping them reach their goals. You form relationships with clients, learn the way their bodies react (or don’t react) to certain kinds of training and get a real feeling of satisfaction when they hit their goals.
If you are thinking about getting a personal trainer, again, I’d go with Fitness Together. FT’s slogan is “1 Client, 1 Trainer, 1 Goal.” Our only responsibility is holding you accountable, and providing the most effective, individualized workouts to help you reach your goals. Since trainers aren’t concerned with selling memberships, or packing their schedules, they spend the time to design the most effective routines, and go the extra mile to help you hit your goals. If you miss a trip to the gym, no one notices. If you miss a session at Fitness Together, you better believe you are getting a phone call, and that session is getting rescheduled for later in the week. No missing workouts unless your hair is on fire. I have a list of clients I call to make sure they go to the gym on their off days, have made meal plans and shopping lists for clients, and send them emails all day long. Personal private training is expensive, but the knowledge you gain lasts a life time. We aren’t trying to keep clients forever and suck them dry: we want to help you reach your goals, while teaching you everything you need to continue a fitness program on your own. We decide with our clients when its time for them to leave, and honestly, there have been times we’ve sent people on their way because we knew they were ready, even if they didn’t feel 100% sure.
Fitness Together is all over the world. To find one near you, use the studio locator. I’ll be filming all the upcoming exercise videos from this very studio from now on. And if you happen to live in Newcastle, or the surrounding Seattle area and are in need of some training, shoot me an email kelly.turner@b5media.com.

I’ll jump in here to offer an unpaid testimonial to the effectiveness of Fitness Together. I have been a client of the FT in Germantown, TN for a little over a year, and what a fantastic year it has been. I not only lost 100 pounds, I gained a whole new perspective on life and how I want to live it. Along the way I learned how to exercise properly and consistently. (I also learned that exercise is fun, but please don’t tell the trainers I said so.)
I’ll always be grateful to the fantastic trainers I’ve had there–not a stinker in the bunch, but there was one guy who was “trying out” who I didn’t really gel with–and I’ll miss them enormously now that I’m getting ready to go out on my own.
Keep up the great work, Kelly. In case your clients forget to tell you, know that what you do is important and it IS appreciated.
It looks pretty. If I lived near you I’d totally join and get you to be my personal trainer:)
Looks like a really fun place and a great environment! I’m glad you have found such a good place to work. And the previous commenter is a great example! You should put her on a poster:)
I don’t think my last comment went through. Hopefully this isn’t repetetive. Would you schedule maybe only 1 or 2 sessions with a client to help design a program and/or have certain people you only meet with once a month or so to tweak their routines? I am pretty self-motivated but would love having a trainer just help me with form/designing a program.
Kelly,
Sweet set up dude!
All the Best,
Andrew R
Cammy- thats what i like about Fitness Together’s team training approach. You don’t always have the same trainer, but, atleast at our studio, you have a Fitness Consultant who is in charge of knowing you inside and out and writing all of your routines. So while the routine/workout/intensity is consistent and everyone is aware of your injuries, etc. you have that one go-to trainer that will help with anything.
and congrats on your weightloss! Once again, you are an inspiration!
Sagan- ever considered moving?
charlotte- we should. we have huge testimonials lining the walls- that would be a good one
tfh- i, personally, have a few clients I do this with. We call it an “accountability program” but all of mine are people that have trained with us for a while and are phasing out. So they used to come in maybe 3-4 times a week, but have progressed to the point where we knocked them back to once a week to check in, tweak gym routines, teach them some new moves and then send them on thier own for the rest of the week. its like dipping their foot in the solo-workout world. Generally, we dont get new clients just looking for a few sessions to update routines, but thats because its expensive to just buy 1 or 2 (you pay per session, not by membership, and the more sessions you buy the better cost per session rate you’ll get.) I cant speak for every studio, but if you came in clear about your intentions (some people buy 1 or 2 to “check it out” then disappear) no one would have a problem with it. There is just A LOT of time and effort put into writing routines, collecting your medical information, performing assessments, etc. so be up front you dont want any of that- just a little help. Ha- long story short, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Andrew R- Thanks! I love working out here when everyong else is gone- can imagine if you had free reign of your gym? Its like a kid in a candy store. by themselves. when its closed.
So fun to hear more about what you do outside of the blogosphere! I’ve always heard really good things about FT! And we all know how great you are! :)
I love my personal trainer! :-)
Very cool, thanks for sharing Kelly!
thanks so much for sharing! I have been looking for something like this in my area (baltimore, md) and looked on the website to see that there are a few nearby. I am sure there are different programs you can sign-up for, but I was having a hard time finding prices and was wondering if that was something you would feel comfortable sharing? If not, no worries! I will plan to call one nearby me to check it out – thanks for the referral though!
Thank you so much for this information. I’m studying for my ACE and I REALLY don’t want to sell things.
thanks for sharing YOU! It must be such a rewarding job!
I can come stalk you now ;o)
(Just kidding, of course)
My neck of the woods desperately needs one. Who is game? :)
Beautiful gym! I believe more semi-private gym facilities are the wave of the future.
