WeRemember.org: Asset Notification

Every year, people pass without letting their beneficiaries know how to access the assets that are now theirs. In some cases beneficiaries don’t even know that they have assets waiting for them. This is where WeRemember.org comes in. This is a Web site that keeps that information for you. All you have to do is build a profile with basic (not too in-depth) information about where your assets are, and who your beneficiaries are.
You provide information about insurance policies and investments, and then offer contact information for your beneficiaries. When you pass on, your beneficiaries are notified. WeRemember.org searches public records regularly to look for matches, and the verification of your passing is done manually. This way, it limits the chance that your beneficiaries will be notified before you actually pass.
This service, in its basic form, is free. This is extremely helpful in terms of providing a place you can go to think about your beneficiaries, and to catalog your assets. This is something that you need to do (even though it can be sort of macabre to think about) in order to fully prepare your finances. While not an estate planning service, WeRemember.org can nonetheless help you organize your assets and make a list of what goes where upon your death.

As a CFP, I can appreciate the reason why this site was created. Most of my clients don’t understand the need for this and don’t understand what can happen without it. I’ve seen plenty of money held up in probate for years and eventually get divided up by the courts. This is a much needed product
