What are you playing this weekend?

I promised myself to finally finish The Bourne Conspiracy, but I still can’t say that I would be able to do so this weekend. Despite its visual flair, the game doesn’t attract me much so I don’t feel the push. I might try to work on Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth once I’ve gathered enough courage.
You see, all this macho stuff related with shooters is misleading. I’m a complete sissy when they take away my big guns and have me sneak around scary places with no weapon whatsoever.
Having no quicksave is another story.
When I’m not facing my PC or TV screen, I plan to get some coop action on the DS with Contra 4, which I haven’t finished to this very day. I consider Contra 4 a contradiction of sorts—I hate its punishing difficulty but I can’t seem to put it down. Strangely, I enjoy the self-inflicted anguish of being challenged yet not progressing despite my best efforts.
How about you? What’s keeping you busy this weekend?

Just recently I started playing Call of Duty 4. It reminds me of playing PC games as well it is a PC based franchise ported to consoles (playing PS3 version). They expect you to have assumed knowledge of how “war” operate before you play, which is critical during gameplay.
Sweet choice, Daniel. ;) The PS3 version is quite sweet, thanks to the FragFX controller. It lets me play console shooters like they’re on the PC.
So how’s your CoD4 playthrough so far?
I guess it’s like a lot of these military themed games from the PC; everytime I play it feels like the game doesn’t want me to like it. Maybe it is just my anti-war stance which makes it hard to relate to the games.
I love the intensity of the fire fights and how it affects how you play the game. Smoke takes ages to settle, enemies are often difficult to spot and each kill takes effort. It’s on overall fantastic title though, just one that I can’t apreciate as much as others.
So you’re not a big military FPS fan. Does that mean you stayed away from Counter-Strike and America’s Army?
Yes, the combat situations make CoD4 a bit trickier than those older FPSes, where graphics were way simpler.
Have you played Battlefield: Bad Company? It’s pretty fun too, with all the destructible environments. I think enemies could be trickier to spot there. You can try renting it, for what it’s worth.
Thing is, it’s another military shooter, but you might enjoy the vehicles. ;)
I like Counter-Strike but that did take a lot of warming into before I became comfortable. I would never play America’s Army though, I guess it’s not war so much that I hate war but rather the culturally elitest view of American that often ties in with war (games). I have a blog article on this issue currently in transit.
I payed close attention to Battlefield, primarily because I felt that this elitist attitude would anger me and from what I can gather, the banter between your commrades does just that.
It’s also because of that unfriendlyness that I find surrounding these games. In my mind they aren’t entirely user friendly at first and all games that I’ve approached liked this remain stubborn on that factor. So too I have found the community of competitive players of these games (no offense intended, I have good friends that play these games too). I find the community to be very resiliant towards newer players of these games. Quite uninviting culture.
Still I plan on persisting through this, my brother who has played several of these games suggests that I just need to push thru the barrier and it’ll all become natural. I can feel that with CoD4.
I understand what you mean by culturally elitist. That’s a good point, if you ask me. ;) No offense taken, since I do agree with you that such games are elitist and not very inviting as well.
Whatever the case, CoD4 is quite an adventure. Its single player campaign is quite short; Infinity Ward seems to have focused its efforts on multiplayer.
Would you be playing CoD4’s multiplayer? I’ve tried it a couple of times, but I’m not too crazy about it myself.
I’ll need to spend more time with the game before I consider multiplayer but it could be a possiblity. I don’t think that I’ll be very good though.
Same here! One of my major reasons for not liking multiplayer is that I’m not very good at any particular game of any genre.
I guess that’s the price we pay for actually having a life, a job, and other interests. :P
