What Kind of Fiction Do You Write?

As you may have already read, August is all about fiction writing here at the Freelance section of Bizzia. Don’t worry – there will be some non-fiction freelancing posts as well for those of you who have no interest in fiction writing at all. However, since I so rarely talk about the topic, I thought it would be fun exploring fiction and freelancing for the month!

I thought we could start of by sharing a little about ourselves with one another. So here’s what I’m curious to know:

  1. What kind of fiction do you write? What kind do you like to read?
  2. Have you ever had anything fiction published? If so, brag about it a little – what and where?
  3. Do you actively pursue fiction freelancing (i.e., you’re trying to make money from it), or is your fiction writing a personal project?
  4. How much time on a weekly or monthly basis do you spend writing fiction?

I’ll start us off by telling you a little about myself! I’ll read almost everything under the sun, but my absolute favorite fiction genre is dystopian future fiction. That’s really specialized; I know! There are a ton of great books out there that fall into this category, though – Never Let Me Go, 1984, World War Z, A Clockwork Orange, The Handmaid’s Tale, Children of Men…I could go on and on. I love sci-fantasy as well, but again, there are few things I won’t read!

That’s not always what I write, though. My fiction writing tends to be realistic, though I have penned some sci-fantasy work as well. I’ve also tried my hand at erotica, which is extremely fun to write and harder than you may think! I tend to gravitate toward writing short stories, simply because I get sidetracked with other projects easily and never finish longer works. Writing fiction falls into the “personal project” category for me most of the time, though I would like to be more active about making money with it in the future.

I do have fiction publishing experience though! My erotica has been published and featured on pretty highly known websites in the erotica community, though I’ll spare you the link here (I write under a pen name). I was also once hired to help someone create a story concept for a video game. That was super fun and really got my creative juices flowing.

Unfortunately, I don’t get as much time to spend on fiction writing as I’d like. I do think that might change, though. Every Tuesday, I spend time at my significant other’s house. It’s one of the few nights he has off every week, but he does have other obligation – stuff he has to get done from home on Tuesdays. While he does that, I usually bring over my laptop and do some work. We can chat and hang out that way at least, even if we’re both busy with other things as well. We have a new rule, though – when I’m at his house, I can ONLY be working on personal projects, like fiction writing. He really wanted to encourage me to spend more time with it, and I agree – I needed the little kick in the behind! So, now I have a few hours every week set aside specifically for fiction.

Ok, you don’t have to write as much as I did (but you can). At least leave a comment and tell us all a little about your fiction writing background!

    Hi Allison,

Well . . . since you asked, I’ve had one mystery novel and short story published. The novel is IDENTITY CRISIS, in which a female attorney investigates related cases of murder and identity theft. The novel was originally published by a small press in 2005, but went out of print when the publisher went out of business.

Since then, I’ve reissued it as an e-book through Amazon, Scribd and Smashwords. I also recently re-released it in print through Lulu.com. You can check it out here, if you like: http://www.lulu.com/content/3923913

My short story appeared in an anthology called CHESAPEAKE CRIMES in 2004. And I have two more short stories pending publication in BackAlleyWebzine.com, as well as in CHESAPEAKE CRIMES 4 coming from Wildside Press in March 2010.

I’ve written three other novels (but am still seeking an agent or publisher) and have started a fifth. In addition, I’ve written the first draft of a feature film and TV pilot script. And even a one-act musical. (I tend to dabble a bit. :) But novels and short stories are my main fiction focus.)

As for what I read, it tends to focus on hardboiled and noir crime fiction, but I like to read lots of other stuff, too (to keep from getting burnt on reading only crime novels).

And, yes, I am trying to write fiction for money. Making my work available on Kindle has really helped. It’s only a little money right now, but I hope that will change.

I’m not sure exactly how much time I spend per week on fiction writing. I’d estimate 10-20 hours, depending on my regular freelance work and schedule.

    Didn’t mean to run on, but you asked . . . :)

This is quite interesting to see what makes fiction writers tick. Although, I am not a fiction writer, I do review this genre as well as non-fiction for my website, bookpleasures.com. Keep up the good work and I am curious to read more from fiction writers.
Best of luck with your writing!

Thanks for sharing, Debbi, and for the well wishes to everyone, Norm!
