What to bring your host

When I go on a long-haul trip, I like to bring something along for the people I am visiting. Chocolate is the gift I rely on most, since most people enjoy it. A big bar or a small box of excellent European chocolate given to the admin who made your hotel reservation is a nice way to say “thank you”.Travelling from the US, I often buy Reese’s Minis or Reese’s Pieces as they are not sold outside of the US. I am always on the lookout for sweets or other small gifts that are only sold in one place and therefore unknown somewhere else. “Pocket Coffee” is chocolate with a coffee filling which I found in Germany, a nice choice for those with two addictions. This time of year when I travel from Germany to the US, I bring along Advent calenders, with and without chocolate.Alessi offers household products like glasses, salt and pepper shakers and toasters with whimsical designs. They also have smaller items which suit my “small gift” category like nail clippers, toothbrush covers and dental floss holders. Sounds weird, but check out http://www.alessi.com/ or http://www.alessi-shop.com/ashop-us/home-design/bathroom-accessories-90151/ They are really cute.Image from Alessi.comWhat are your favorite gifts for hosts?

Lest anyone think Jean is unwilling to bring the little “floss man” shown above as a gift, I can attest to having received that very item, albeit in light green. I love it, although the kids like to play with the floss so we’ve retired it for the moment.
