When Safely Remove Hardware Does Nothing

September 21, 2008 by Jason Bean

One of the problems I ran across with all of my recent computer issues has been with whether or not to setup my portable hard drives with the ability to quickly disconnect the drive, or be made to use the Safely Remove Hardware functionality.

When choosing the latter, what should you do if you see the error message like the one above?

I tried to wait for a bit, but nothing seemed to help. Eventually I just removed the drive. What’s the impact of doing that? Has anyone really experienced problems?

It would be my understanding that the potential for disk errors or significant fragmentation would be more likely.

    Hey,
this happens when a program, mostly “explorer” or “windows media player” in such cases, leaves a thread on a folder in your removable disk. The solution I found very effective is this small program called unblocker found at this address: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
