Who said it?

October 23, 2007 by Dinsa Sachan

Who said this and in what context?

The bowler’s Holding, the batsman’s Willey.

That’s throwing a challenge out to all the self-acclaimed cricket experts and historians.

Warning: Don’t even try Google. SixandOut has intuitive powers. If you do, she’ll know.

Oh, and if someone was batting their lashes in glee, expecting a super-nice prize for their guesswork, well, you know how mean I am.

Okay, maybe, not all that mean.

Do you have a Bookmooch account? The first correct replier can mooch a Shane Warne: My Illustrated Career from me. Look for me as Dinnie there.

  1. It was Richie Benaud I think, or maybe another commentator:

    Batsman: Peter Willey
    Bowler: Michael Holding…

    good 1…

    Hi Behind,

    Hope ya doing fine.

    Yup, Bookmooch registration is free.

Answer to the question will be revealed tomorrow.

    Night.

  5. SIXANDOUT says:

Ha. Sorry, Behind. Maybe next time.

I’ll keep in mind that you’ve been honest to me twice.

  6. Stuart says:

    My two cents worth on this question;

I think the commentator was Brian Johnston and I think it occurred during the 1976 England V West Indies series (Oval test in which Holding took 14 wickets). Evidently the BBC got quite a few complaints from listeners about the rude comment “the bowlers Holding the batsman’s Willey”.

  7. SIXANDOUT says:

Bingo. I knew you would get it, Stuart. Let me know if you want the book. I’ll be mailing books to my Bookmooch friends in the first week of Nov.

    Well done!

  8. Stuart says:

    Hi Six,

I don’t have a bookmooch account, but will look at doing so – it sounds cool. I’ve already got a copy of the book, so don’t panic about it. I’m sure there is another deserving moocher out there who won’t cost you as much in postage!

  9. SIXANDOUT says:

    Very wise of you. :)
