Who Should I Cheer for at Euro2008
The BBC are currently running a series of promotions asking you who you are supporting for the Euro2008 football tournament, which starts next week. They have to drum up some excitement if they are showing the games and non of the home teams have made it. The hook they’re using is that many of the club players that people follow every week are playing for their respective countries, so you can support your team players as you tune into the matches.
But there’s another campaign of the same name from a most surprising source. The World Development Movement, an NGO working against poverty, have a UK campaign asking Who Should I Cheer For. This is a re-run of something they did for the 2006 World Cup; by providing you lots of information about the countries taking part, they’re trying to get you to think about the activities of each country, in areas such as military spending, carbon emissions and the Happiness Quota. According to their measurements, the team you should be supporting is Sweden, although from a footie perspective, they’re not favoured.
So who are you supporting? I’m also guessing this won’t be the last Euro08 post as the tournament ramps up and the sponsors try and get some marketing exposure out if it. I wonder how many plans had to be redone when we did not qualify?
