Why Fall is the Perfect Time to Begin and Build your Yoga Practice

For me, autumn is the perfect time to begin or build a yoga practice. Personally, I find Fall filled with nostalgia, peace and opportunities for spiritual change. I use this time to get ready for a cold winter ahead, think about the past year and what I would like to do in the future, and just enjoy the amazing show nature puts on for all of us this time of year.
All those emotions wrapped up (for me) open a big window for spiritual renewal and a desire to take stock, meditate and connect with nature and the universe. Unlike the busyness of spring and summer when I just want to get back out after a long cold winter and reconnect with family and friends, the tranquility of Fall pulls me back in spiritually and encourages me to reach a little deeper into my practice, really focusing my thoughts and energy on my practice and where I want to go with it, and where I want it to take me.
I think for most people this time of year has that same effect. You simply think more. maybe it’s in our DNA–we know winter is approaching and we want to prepare ourselves for it in every way possible.
This weekend I am taking the time to really get my in-home studio in shape, organized, and make it a place for me to go and truly be able to find peace. This year it means a facelift. I am painting the walls a gorgeous green that I’m hoping will provide me with a more beautiful space to look at while I am meditating, stretching and practicing. I’ve cleared the clutter and filled the shelves with inspirational books and objects I have a deep emotional attchment to so that I feel surrounded by positive energy, love and relaxing thoughts and ideas.
In essence, I use the Fall to take stock, even in my practice–to plan ahead for what I want to accomplish at many level, including through yoga and meditation–and do what I can to make that real and tangible before the incredibly cold north wind blows through (I live about a thousand yards from Lake Erie :-)).
That’s how I am spending my free time this Fall. My main goal is to achieve balance in every area of my life, and yes, yoga plays a large role in that. I would love to hear what you are planning to do in your world this season, and how your practice and thought processes are working together to help you reach your goals and enhance your mind-body connection.
Please share! And Peace.

I like this; my wife and I have been talking about starting up yoga for years…maybe this post has, finally, inspired me to put my money where my mouth is.
peace,

I recently cleaned up our spare room that acts as an office and workout studio (yoga and more). It’s amazing how much better a room feels once it’s been decluttered.
