Why Promote Your Offline Business Online?

July 16, 2009 by Linette Gerlach

Even if your small business is all local, and all conducted offline, you should still have a website and promote your business online in today’s market. If you’re not, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity, and probably many potential customers.

Why should you promote your offline business online? I can give you several reasons why you should promote your offline business online, here are the top three in my opinion.online-business-promotion3

  • The biggest reason is your competition is probably already doing it. If you don’t already have an online promotion plan in place, you’re already behind because you can bet your competition down the street has a website, and is already promoting themselves online and through social media.
  • Need another big reason to promote your offline business online? That’s where your customers are looking for you. People used to look in the phone book first when they were looking for a business. Increasingly people are looking everything up online, and turning to the phone book less and less. Even when they’re looking for local businesses many turn to Google before they turn to the phone company.
  • The third reason you should be marketing online is cost. Online advertising and promotion is cheaper than conventional methods, and there are even several free (and almost free) ways to promote your business online. That’s probably the subject for a whole other post, or two or three…

At the very least your company should have a website, and you should be using some of the free social media sites to help you promote it. If it’s not your thing, find someone to help you who understands social networking, chances are at least one of your employees or friends has a Facebook account, has a blog, or is already active on Twitter. Have them teach you the basics, or hire them to do it for you.

  1. Steve says:

Not only are sites like Facebook and Twitter particularly cost effective for gaining exposure for your small business, but sites like YouTube and AdWido as well. Posting a short, attention-grabbing video to these sites and others could easily create some viral, word-of-mouth advertising.

  1. [...] Leave a Comment // If you think your small business doesn’t need to be marketed online because all your business is local, you’re wrong. You can use the internet to market your small business locally. I talked a little about this the other day, when I talked about marketing your offline small business online. [...]
