Why You Should Keep Track of Your Expenses

One of the things you hear from personal finance bloggers, gurus and even financial planners is that you should keep track of your expenses. However, few of us really do sit down and look over what we’re spending our money on. Over at Frugal Dad, there is a great post on running your household like a business. One of the items that really stuck with me was the idea of a financial review.

Review your spending

2418695_3600b4cab5It is vital that you review your spending. Keep track of your expenses so that you can review where your money is going. Organizing your expenses into categories like savings, investing, retirement, groceries, debt reduction, dining out, education, clothing and household items can help you get the big picture. If you have personal finance software, regularly entering your expenses can result in the ability to easily and visually review your expenses.

Adjusting your spending

Once you see where your money is going, it is easier to make adjustments. You can identify where money is wasted, and determine what you can cut back on if you want to use your money elsewhere. When my husband and I first started doing a review of our expenses, we were surprised at how much money was being spent on eating out and how much was being spent on “little” things that started to add up. We also noticed that we spent a lot on impulse “bargains” that we didn’t really need.

Once we were able to identify the spending habits that were draining our monthly income and preventing us from reaching our goals, we were able to fix some of our bad money habits and make better, more efficient use of our resources.
