Will Detroit Lions destroy Sam Bradford Part II

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Will Detroit Lions destroy Sam Bradford Part I chronicled the effect of Sam Bradford on Michigan State football.

Keith Nichol transfers to MSU

Sam Bradford beat out Keith Nichol and Keith took 3rd string reps the rest of the year. That was it; he was stuck behind a player that was incredible and in the same class. Keith Nichol took his cleats and came home and enrolled at MSU.

Transfer rules dictate that Keith had to sit the year out, so he ran the scout team which helped his game a lot.

Unfortunately, while Keith Nichol went to Oklahoma to compete with Sam Bradford, MSU had to go to recruiting plan B. The recruited another less heralded Michigan quarterback named Kirk Cousins. Kirk ran the scout team last year at MSU and did well in big games as a replacement for Senior Brian Hoyer in big games this year.

Keith and Kirk will compete next year for the starting spot.

One day Sam Bradford is competing with Keith Nichol for the starting job at Oklahoma and the next day Nichol is a Spartan and Sam is going to the NFL as a potential first pick in the draft.

Drew Stanton

The improbable Lions made a trade to move up in the second round a few years ago and picked Drew Stanton in the draft. Why, no one knows. Drew led my Spartans to a losing record and he was injured a lot.

Drew went to the Lions and has spent almost all of his time on the IR. Geez, some schools pick up the USC quarterback or the Florida quarterback, but not the Lions. All Spartan fans, me included, love Drew and want him to do well, but come on.

Drew Henson

Meanwhile, the Lions in their desperation picked up former UM Wolverine phenom Drew Henson. Drew had played with relatively unknown quarterback, Tom Brady at UM.

There was this one game where the Wolverines played my Spartans. Lloyd Carr liked to pull Tom Brady in the second quarter and play Drew Henson. Drew could throw rockets.

In that same game, Tom Brady completed what seemed like 15 passes in a row. My thoughts at the time were that Drew had all the tools, but that Brady kid is really accurate, but Brady wouldn’t be any good in the NFL. He couldn’t throw the deep ball. Who knew Tom would turn out to be one of the best quarterbacks of all time? He not only is accurate, but can read defenses and has a quick release and is a tremendous leader.

So what happened to Drew? This is just conjecture, but George Steinbrenner offered him a very lucrative minor league contract to play baseball, third base to be exact. George just happens to be an Ohio State Buckeye fan. Do you smell a rat here? This means his Buckeyes would never face Drew Henson again. Just conjecture.

Drew did not become a big star and went back to football, bounced around and ended up on the Lions.

Should the Detroit Lions draft Sam Bradford with the first pick in the NFL draft, then most likely it would send both Drew’s, Stanton and Henson, packing. The Lions already have Culpepper and Orlovsky.

Sam Bradford

Tons of positive press coverage is coming the way of Sam Bradford after winning the Heisman. If there is anything the Lions like, it is the appearance of entertainment.

The biggest surprise of the night came when Texas quarterback Colt McCoy finished second in the voting. The voting finished like this:

Author Poll
Who Should’ve Won The Heisman Trophy?

Sam Bradford Colt McCoy Tim Tebow vote to see results Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma: 1,726 points

Colt McCoy QB Texas: 1,604 points

Tim Tebow QB Florida: 1,575 points

Tebow won last year’s award, becoming the first sophomore to do so, Bradford became the second.

“I was definitely surprised and I think it’s everything I imagined,” said Bradford. “I think it will take a couple weeks to set in.” Bradford leads the nation in passer rating (186.3) and has thrown for 4,464 yards and 48 touchdowns, directing the Sooners’ fast-paced, no-huddle offense.

Now, according to the Detroit Free Press, 3 mock drafts have Sam Bradford going to the Lions.

Man, if Bradford gets drafted by the Lions it is all over for him. The last Heisman winner the Lions drafted was Andre Ware. Yeah, Under wear did not last long. They have destroyed other big name quarterbacks like Chuck Long and Joey Harrington. The Lions have also drafted such unnotables like Mike McMahon and Charlie Batch and kept them unnotable.

Detroit has no offensive line and one receiver in Calvin Johnson.

Everything will hinge on the General Manager that Detroit hires. My fear is they will go with the interim guy Mayhew and he won’t clean house. Mayhew is the underdog and Owner William Clay Ford loves the underdog. That would most likely lead to more of the same old losing ways.

Detroit will destroy Sam Bradford.

  1. Kevin says:

I don’t think the Lions will go for Bradford. The OL is a much bigger concern.

Also with Tavaris Jackson and Tyler Thigpen stepping up, there will be less teams taking a QB in the first round which would leave the Lions able to take a QB with the second first round pick. Stafford, Sanchez or Freeman would be the likely picks at that time.

  2. Jeremy says:

Sanchez all the way… they need a QB! The Defense will be built properly by Schwartz through some draft, but mostly trade and free-agency. The OL isn’t nearly as necessary as a decent QB line-up. Sanchez is a healthy dude, and Bradford may not accept a draft by the Lions…Sanchez LOVES football… he’ll take the chance to build something for a team who has been around the block
