Will Muschamp: Patient or Just Stupid?

This week, Texas announced that defensive coordinator Will Muschamp will replace head coach Mack Brown when he retires. The key phrase? “When he retires.” Brown still has EIGHT years left on his contract, and he’s only 57 years old. He intends to finish out his contract at least, and if he’s doing well at that point who know what kind of extensions he’ll be offered.

Now, I understand dedication to a team as much as the next person. Maybe even more – I am a Penn State fan. I think that it is super cool that Muschamp is will to wait for his turn at the helm, even though it will likely be 8+ years.

But why in HELL would you announce that? It is one thing for the AD to approach someone and say “you’re the man when Brown leaves,” but when everyone knows that it will be nearly a decade before that is possible, why would you box yourself in with a public announcement?

All I’m saying is that a lot can happen in 8+ years. What if another high-profile job comes open? Muschamp almost can’t even apply or fans will turn. And here’s the other issue I have – he’s only been at Texas for LESS THAN ONE YEAR. Yes, they’re having an amazing season, but why would they make a choice about Muschamp at this point?

It’s a good choice, in my opinion. He seems like, someday, he’ll make a great head coach. I just don’t think they should have announced it at this point.

Weigh in with a comment below – is Muschamp a good choice to replace Brown?
