ThreatFire has done a study on Microsoft operating systems namely: Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and Windows Vista. The number of threats allowed per a thousand computers are as follows:
Windows 2000: 586
Windows Server 2003: 478
Windows XP: 1,021
Windows Vista: 639
Clearly, Windows Server 2003 is the most secure and Windows Vista is 37% less vulnerable than Windows XP. Many people would question the security of Windows Vista against Windows XP saying that only 37% more secure than its predecessor is low. I’m happy with the numbers because if Windows Vista becomes 100% more secure than XP then there’s a major problem with the operating system that has been in circulation for so many years now. Around 40% is just fine because if it was just less than 20% then it would be hard for Microsoft to sell their software on security comparisons with XP.
