If you are running Windows Vista SP1 and are using a SigmaTel sound card, you should not install a recent IDT update named “IDT High Def Codec” from Windows Update as you are bound to lose your audio as reported by users here.
The users who have reported this are using Dell computers and people are still waiting for an official announcement about compatability drivers to fix this error from either Microsoft or Dell.

I have had problems with Vista SP1 and my audio…i have no sound in youtube, but my cd’s will play ok…I have attempted to download and install new/old drivers….with no results….I have used system resore to earlier dates with no help…Needless to say i am frustrated to the max.
I am Using Windows Vista Ultimate 64- Bit and having problems in listening audio. I installed Ac3 filter What else i should i do?
I got Intel DG965RY, with Sigmatel built in sound Device
I have encountered this very problem….I have Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC in my Dell XPS M1210 and have no sound…the system tray icon indicates that I have sound and all other indicators show I should have sound, thou alas no sound…will try to uninstall the afore mention update or disable…hope that takes care of the problem
I’m having simular issues with my sound as well. I do not have sound through any internet sites like youtube and other video playback media. do how ever have sound when I use my Media Player, DVD, and Regular audio CD’s. I’m really unsatified with vista as a whole. This is one more reason why I should not have chose to use Vista.
I agree…..Vista was a HUGE mistake!!! I went through this before with Windows “ME” & should have learned my lesson in that! Microsoft doesn’t even recogize the existence of “ME”…..& I believe Vista will be the same.
If any of you have found a resolve to this sound issue here, please advise!
Thanks!
I’m having simular issues with my sound as well.
Asus laptop with sigmatel sound on board
Doesnt work at all with Vista 64. no good working drivers availble.
Everything worked accept sigmatel sound
Thx sigmatel.
going back to XP
I have the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC on my Dell computer. The same thing has happened to me as well. Before I uninstall the whole thing I wanted to make sure I would still have sound?? This whole thing has made it so my computer won’t play any of my music, it will however, play videos and music online. I just don’t want to screw my computer up even more by uninstalling. Let me know.
THANKS!
Yes, I have Vista (came on my Dell) & much prefer XP!!! My sound etc. all worked well until Windows came out with SP1 for Vista…..when I loaded it, my sound left. As badly as I hate to admit it, since I abhor Vista, it’s not all Vista, the problem is with Vista plus the SP1. I restored back to beyond my download of the SP1 & my sound returned. I do not know of a fix for sound with SP1….but my sound is fine just as long as I don’t download SP1 again.
Don’t know….but maybe this will help some of you all out there.
I have the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC on my Dell computer. I agree with every posting read so far, I too think DELL & Microsoft need to fix this mess that was sold to us. I will try to phone for support and get some help, if successful I will come back and let everyone know what to do….. That is if I don’t lose my mind dealing with some Bangladesh or East Timor Phone Sweatshop first.
I had the same problem, have SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC and Vista Ultimate on my Dell Inspiron 1720 computer. Was very frustrated with no sound problem. Called Dell, tech tried everything ( long session 3 hours)nothing worked- finally said we have to reinstall Vista. Anyway I did not want to go that route and saved it as a last resort. Went on the web and seems lot of us were having the same problem- lot of suggestions, some tweaking the registry etc. Finally this is what I did and got back my sound.
1. Downloaded from Dell: (SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio (R147075) and installed it.
Site: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?releaseid=R147075&deviceid=8907&fileid=195629
Incidentally after I restarted the computer it went through a chk disk and when windowds started: Guess what the sound came back.
2. Updated to (SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio (R171786)
Site:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R171786&SystemID=XPS_M1330&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=8907&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=235779
Sound is working. I feel the drivers might have been corrupted and by reinstalling the drivers it got corrected. This happened after an update was installed by windows on Nov 15. Hope this helps those having the same problem.
You said it best John, & I totally agree!!! Dell & Microsoft owe it to us to come up with some resolve!!!
My daughter’s new Inspiron 1420, delivered 2-wks ago, stopped audio after a windows update, but we thought it was the speakers or her iTune program loading. I reloaded drivers, no go. I contacted Dell and a service tech changed speakers, no go. He wanted to change the motherboard, next. I googled “sigmatel audio” and got this blog page. Read Ashok Soni’s suggestion: the second download made the driver repair. Thank you! –> I’ll let the support guys (India?) and the tech who came to the house today know the good news: there is a solution and it ain’t the hardware!!!! seadog
Same problems here running an ASUS Pro31F. I tried installing the driver from Microsoft and also tired the one provided by ASUS but none seem to work!!!
We should charge Microsoft for the hours we spend trying to resolve THIER issues !!!
Well, i tried askok’s way to fix the problem but when ever i try to install (SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio (R147075) this error comes up ” device object not present, restart the system and run setup again.” any one know how to get around this?? if not… xp here i come
Hello Jake – I have the same problem – I install R147075 (after making it compatible with Win XP though I run Vista – I saw this hint on another post site) but I get the same error as you “device object not present, restart the system and run setup again.”
Have not yet found a solution to this, so please advise if anyone has found a fix
Just like to let everyone know i have vista Sp1 and i installed the IDT update and lost sound but to fix it all i did was remove IDT Audio from Programs and Features then when that finished i ran a scan for plug n play hardware in Device Manager and it installed old drivers and now i have sound back
Hi Dave,
Could you please specify how you did it? I am going through the same hurdle, tried to do as you have mentioned but not successful.
however, i can still have my sound with earphones just that wihtout ear phones the sound doesn’t come
HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP..I HAVE A GATEWAY LAPTOP WITH DELL COMPONENTS AND A STIGMATEL SOUND CARD ..O/S WINDOWS VISTA..WHERE CAN I FIND A STEROMIXER FOR BETTER SOUND QUALITY .. ?
when i got my laptop i installed everything and all the updates and everything was normal! but then i noticed my sound didnt work…and i’m actually a very technical person and i tried almost everything! i called the gateway people up as well, and they really were no help. idk what to do
WOWWWW GUESS NOONE CAN HELP ..THANKS ANYWAY…I LEARNED 1 THING FOR SURE…SIGMATEL AUDIO SUX ,,AND DELL DESERVES TO HAVE SIGMATEL AUDIO ..WITH A SUPORT GROUP THAT KNOWS LESS THAN ME ..HAAAA THATS A LAUGH
Its not an issue with windows Vista operating system but the sigmatel device & drivers that was not codeded to run the Vista UAA ( Universal Audio Architecture )properly; they need to check DDK ( Driver Development Kit ) from Microsoft, same with the Creative sound blaster . The creative sound blaster have hardware which needs driver to be loaded in the kernel level as in Win XP , that is unsupported in vista , Microsoft decided this to have the OS stable and avoid BSOD instead repairing the courrpt drivers after the system loads using the Hardware DEP , Well as always, Microsoft is blamed
I belive that Microsoft should be more selfish and should be monopolist like Apple Machontish , having self selected hardware put together with the OS and applications , I guess instead of blaming dell and Microsft to get to our rescue , its a matter of 20 $ USD , or 1000 Rs INR to get multi channel sound card that works on vista .
Thanks
Rishi

Not the least idea what this is all about or what needs to be done.
Is urgent problem because this Vista Ultimate Dell laptop must regain the 22.3 MB of Memory.
Will much appreciate response from you far more knowledgeable geeks!
Thank you. Sincerely, RO
Thank you Ashok Soni. You repaired my computer and I have to no longer rely on lousy external speakers! Your suggestions were spot on for me.
