Windows Vista will boot in three seconds, says Microsoft

Microsoft is promising that computers run on Windows Vista will start up and shut down in 2 – 3 seconds. The official site reports :

Windows Vista computer starts and shuts down as quickly and reliably as a television, typically within 2 to 3 seconds. Windows Vista processes login scripts and startup programs and services in the background so you can start working right away. You’ll also shut down and restart your computer less often by using the New Sleep state, a simple one-click on and off experience which not only reduces power consumption, but also delivers and protects user data.

A new technology called SuperFetch will help this process along. But many remain skeptical.

    Welcome to last week! :D

Booting in 2 or 3 seconds is impossible, you can’t even get passed the bios or memcheck in that time. As has been discussed extensively elsewhere, this is boot from hibernate – which Win2K and XP already do in less than 5 seconds.

Seriously though, you need to stop referencing softpedia, they’re not exactly credible.

Some claim. It’s probably sleep. And Mac OS X already does that in 1 second or less. Lagging as usual. My PC at work takes an impossible amount of time to boot up, most of that is network stuff, but startup after login is appallingly slow too. And hibernate doesn’t work properly. But then that’s as much Dell’s problem as Microsoft.

I tend to think that booting is after posting bios. That is all MS can fix. We will see if it works

Bootups as short and quick as 15″ are possible on other systems since 1985! These systems worked with CPUs as slow as less than 8Mhz in speed! (Wake up Bill!) Right now, XP can boot up in under 30″ on a decent system but it is a ‘fake quick’ boot I am afraid since not all items are fully downloaded in such a short time for such an OS that is so huge in size. Then if you have multiple accounts too, you would have to wait even longer for an account’s Personal Settings to download! A full bootup on XP right now, on a decent system, takes at least 1′ (that is One Minute btw, not a second!) and it is still very slow …
