Windows Vista will get HD DVD not Blu-Ray

Despite Hollywood backing for the rival Blu-Ray format, Windows Vista will be compatible with the HD DVD format, Steve Ballmer has said.

The Microsoft CEO spelled out the company’s policy at a press conference in Tokyo. Ballmer believes the Toshiba backed HD DVD is more suitable for personal computers than Sony’s choice of Blu-Ray.

Initially, Vista will not be compatible with HD DVD drives but will receive that facility as early as possible.

The Blu-Ray format has recently been backed by both MGM and Warner Brothers, but Ballmer insisted Hollywood supported both formats.

  1. [...] We wrote about Vista getting HD DVD, not Blu-Ray. But the last few days it has become more and more obvious that there is no real leader in the format-race. And if there will ever be one, with products still not available in the retail market. The microsoftweblog.com writes that the CTP release of Windows Vista may include support for Blu-Ray technology, although it’s denied by Microsoft who states it’s the responsibility for other developers to include support for that technology (since Microsoft is providing the platform itself)… This entry was posted on Tuesday, January 24th, 2006 and is filed under Windows Vista, Microsoft.
