Working With a Client’s Material

ghost.jpgRecently a ghostwriting client sent me two emails in response to a draft chapter I’d sent. I’d asked him to explain some of his thinking, and that’s what the emails represented.

I found the first tough going. I copied the body of the email into word and double spaced it to make it easier to read. It’s obviously top of the head stuff so there’s no particular form… broken sentences, and no paragraphs.

But the info there is gold for the book we’re writing. I’ve read it twice, and know roughly where in the chapter the info will go. Now, before I actually do any writing I’m putting his work aside and letting it yeast a bit in my mind.

His whole philosophy is quite different than mine and I need to let the material settle in my brain for a bit before I work it into the manuscript. If I don’t, I’m in danger of letting too much of me show through.

By the time I actually write I’ll understand his point of view… which is one of the things that makes ghostwriting truly exciting for me.

Write well and often,
