Wrapping It Up Just in Time for Christmas: The “Choosing the Right PMO Vision” Series

In November 2007 I did 20 posts on how to go about choosing the right PMO vision for your company. It is a step by step approach that starts with a few posts on how to agree on the problem to be solved. Thereafter, PMO models were considered based on value based criteria. The series is a five parter that I have wrapped up and put a bow on as an item under my “Pages” titled Choosing the Righ PMO Vision Series. I am deeply indebted to Gerry Kendall and Steve Rollins for their excellent work in this area. Their book Advanced Project Portfolio Management and the PMO is the bible in the area of Theory of Constraints based, extremely high-value project management. The five parts of the series are:

1. Key considerations- why a PMO in the first place, reporting structure, underlying theme

2. Senior executive pain- rampant project and strategy execution failure leading to considering a PMO

3. PMO models- low vs. high value and why they must be high value or risk disbandment

4. Value assessment- why this is a necessary step

5. Vision beyond the vision- once project failures are down and you do projects that support strategies, what’s next? (Hint: a PMO that supports innovation)

The approaches talked about in this series are tried and proven and have helped companies dramatically improve the execution of strategies in their companies.
