You Get To Negotiate

When you are in the midst of a job search, even in this market, you are not at the mercy of the organization. You don’t have to take anything they offer. Negotiation is still an option when it comes to salary. By definition, negotiate means to bargain with others for an agreement.

One key for successful negotiation is to be clear about the market value of the position. What is the position worth in the current job market? Do your homework and know what other organizations are paying for a similar job. Don’t get stuck on one number. Negotiate within a salary range. I recommend a ten thousand dollar range, ($55,000 – $65,000). Understand that your range should fall within their range.

Lots of organizations ask you what your salary requirements are early in the process. If you an avoid that conversation early in the process, you have a better chance to negotiate your salary once they get down to the last 2-3 candidates they are considering.

Here are some things to remember:

1. If you decline the offer, you put the job offer in jeopardy. Be ready for that. How you communicate your needs around salary are important for further conversations.

2.Be specific about what you are looking for once you decline the offer. If you need an additional 3 thousand dollars per year, say so and be definitive.

3. It is very important that you communicate your willingness to accept the offer if they accept your terms.

4. Be positive! Period. This is not the time to be rude, abrasive, or threatening to the hiring manager or organization.

5. Keep in mind that there are organizations who have rigid salary policies, especially at the entry level. But don’t let that stop you.

Don’t assume you can not negotiate your salary. Just make sure that you are within the range they are willing to pay for job you are considering. The more value you have created throughout the interview process, the more likely they will be willing to discuss the salary and benefits package.
