08.08.08 and Product Launches

To most Westerners, August 8 2008 marks the opening of the Olympics in China. To those who reside on the other side of the pond, namely the great eastern lands of Asia, the date 08.08.08 is considered to be a very lucky day for wealth and prosperity.
As a journalist and frequent attendee of events, I know of 6 friends who are getting married on this day. I also know of many technology product launches as well – companies here in Asia have planned the launch date months in advance for this date (i.e. the Samsung Omnia is launching in the PH). Add a few restaurant openings, press conferences and yes, parties and you have one full day of events, events, events. Ask around. You’ll be surprised.
Makes me wonder why the iPhone 3G is not launching today, but on the 24th as this was a truly Asian release.
