BenQ-Siemens S88

The recent merger of BenQ and Siemens mobile has given birth to at least 30 new handsets to be unveiled this year. The first quarter of 2006 will see the launch of three new phones. Among the three, the BenQ-Siemens S88 seems to be the most promising because it is feature-packed with all the goodies we love.

Form Factor
I had a chance to hold the new S88, albeit it was only a half-baked experience since it was a demo unit. But the unit weighs a decent 105 grams with bar dimensions of 99.5 x 47 x 17mm. That’s rouughly the size and weight of the Sony Ericsson K750i. In fact, it looks like a cross between the k750i with a Nokia front. It comes in two colors – Michael Jackson white and Michael Jackson black.

Screen
The S88 comes with a fantastic high-contrast 262k color OLED screen, a fast-adopting technology that makes screens brighter at less cost to the manufacturer. What’s so good about OLED is that the screen edges are just as bright as the center, compared to LCDs.

Camera
The S88 has, surprisingly, a Sony 2.0MP autofocus lens capable of 16x digital zoom. It also comes with a Citizen high brightness LED flashlight, having wide screen capability for capturing. The S88 holds like aa k750i, where the shutter button is located at the side of the unit. It will feel very familiar to current SE owners.

Multimedia
The S88 is stressed to have unlimited video recording time courtesy of its expandable microSD slot. Internal memory is bumped to 20MB, which is still pretty decent for pictures and other data.

It also comes with a built-in music player that supports MP3, AAC(+) and AMR. Holy cow!

Connectivity
The S88 is a triband GSM phone that also supports Bluetooth 1.1 connectivity.

What I still don’t know
The S88 comes with a proprietary sync software which I’m very unsure of. In the same way, I do not know how smoooth the Bluetooth syncing with PDAs and computers will become. Overall though, this phone promises to be a great addition to 2006’s line of multimedia mobiles. I really think BenQ-Siemens did a great job with this flagship unit.

I just hope the sync software is just as good.

  1. Just surfing the sidebar today .. I didn’t know BenQ made cell phones. I am using their model A122 keyboard and it’s great .. small, compact, light, and of course… black and silver – just like the above phone .. Hmm

  1. [...] The S88 is BenQ-Siemens’ first flagship phone for 2006. It comes in two colors – black and white and from afar borrows a lot from the Sony Ericsson design. I was able to borrow the S88 for a few days and here is my hands on review. [...]
