Coming Not So Soon: The iPhone Product Line

Ever wonder why Apple only released ONE iPhone? Of course! There’s no need to wonder. This is Apple’s experiment into the uncharted waters of the GSM / CDMA industry.

Let’s take some example from Nokia – whenever the Finns release a new product, it comes with a “line” of other phones – take the N series for instance. These are merely rebranded phones from their “6″ line with better multimedia capabilities. Also, the Finns have taught other phone manufacturers that there has been a diverse taste in hardware configs with consumers – the “same phone” gets molded into three different types … the clamshell, the candybar and the slider – turning one product into three different phones. And then the marketing department kicks in to create a campaign promoting each phone as “different!”

Sony Ericsson slowly followed suite after the success of the W800i Walkman phone. They branched out to the W550i, the W810i , the W900i and many many more.

So what’s the point? If the iPhone turns out to be a success, we’ll probably be seeing more versions of the iPhone by end of this year. Maybe a version that does away with the touch screen in favor of hardware buttons. Or a model that kicks in more storage and battery life to simulate the new iPod. Or a more basic model with 1GB of storage and no screen …. think different ladies and gents!!!

Oh almost forgot. Asia isn’t getting the phone till 2008 anyway. Bummer.
