Did Apple really need to do that?

Brick the iPhone that is.

Brick modified iPhones after undergoing a software update. In the latest iPhone patch released almost a week and a half ago, Apple made provisions for certain new features such as the WiFi music store and performance optimizers. But it also warned modified iPhone owners that this patch might brick their current units.

Did Apple really need to do that? Was it so inherent in their firmware update that they needed to brick these units to update these phones? Or are they really the new evil empire?
