iPod nano screen scratches easy

Uh oh, looks like Apple’s engineers made a boo-boo with the iPod nano’s screen. It seems like this piece of tech wear isn’t “wear and tear.” Small, flat products with a screen that takes up a considerable amount of real estate are really prone to getting damaged.

Which is what happened to my iPAQ 4350 one fateful afternoon. I sat on it and the screen went dead. So did my digital lifestyle. But that story is for another time.

That’s basically another reason to stick to screen-less displays. Hehe.

Register reader Matt Baker says “the plastic on the front panel scratches insanely easily”, and comments that that hardly makes sense, “especially for a device that’s sold in a large amount based on its appearance, and that launched at least a month before any cases for it will be available. Mine has lived either on a work surface, in a shirt pocket on its own, or (as demonstrated by Steve Jobs to be a suitable place when he launched it) in the change pocket of my jeans, again on its own.”

The Register reports nano screen trauma

The Apple forums are clamoring for a solution!

UPDATE: Colbert from The Gadget Blog recommends this solution called the invisibleSHIELD protector for the nano.

hey thats neat. it actually reminds me of the plastic film packaging the old iPods came with, but more loose.

Yes, my ipod nano scratched about 1 week after I received it as a gift, all I did was put it in my overnight bag with some clothes and it returned home scratched, I wish someone had warned me, and I wouldn’t have tried to prevent this :( Any suggestion for getting the scratches out, or trying to return it with the warranty? Thanks-Jen

  1. [...] After several complaints of cracked screens and easily-scratched surfaces, Apple has now admitted that a number of iPOD Nanos are indeed flawed. In addressing the broken screens, the first of the two issues, Apple said that they have tracked down the problem. “This is a real but minor issue involving a vendor quality problem in a small number of units,” Schiller told MacCentral. “In fact, this issue has affected less than 1/10 of 1 percent of the total iPod nano units that we’ve shipped. It is not a design issue.” [...]

  2. [...] Their have been complaints about the Ipod Nano having scratches. Just to let anyone know that If your scared of scratches in any way, use the Ipod Nano InvisibleSHIELD. [...]
