Nokia 6270

EDIT: The 6270 is a revamped Series 40 UI phone. I mentioned earlier that it was S60. Thanks Tommi for the erratum.

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been posting a lot about new Nokia phones the past few days. No biases for Nokia products here. It’s merely part of the company’s quarterly release strategy which I definitely noticed about them.

Well, this Nokia isn’t exactly new in the press release sense. It’s actually been around for quite a while, making its debut back in June 2005. Thing is, not all countries had the luxury of having this phone on display shelves back in 2005.

Presenting the Nokia 6270.

The first thing that popped into my mind was the creative form factor that makes the 6270 look like my electric shaver at home: if Motorola has the RAZR, then let Nokia have the SHAVR. Stripped down to its bare essentials, the 6270 is a quad-band phone capable of fast EDGE connectivity. The unit takes the slider template, allowing the top half to house the 320×240 QVGA screen as well as the 4-way directional pad, two call buttons and the menu buttons.

The bottom half of the unit is solely dedicated to the keypad. I experienced some problems with the slider mechanism. Sometimes, the upper body gets stuck on a small protrusion in the 5 key. This is caused by a rickety design (or a design that could lead to a rickety slider) that becomes apparent once you try to take pictures.

Multimedia stuff
Two things define the multimedia experience of this phone – the built in digital music player that supports both MP3 and AAC formats and the 2.0 megapixel camera with built-in flash. First off, the 9MB of internal memory doesn’t do justice to either feature which is why Nokia included a 128MB miniSD card for free!

The New and Improved (?) Nokia UI
The 6270 is one of the latter Series 40 platform releases from Nokia. I was a little surprised with some default UI changes that sadly, make the phone a little less friendly to use. The most noticeable change is that sending messages will take you on a button pressing journey that isn’t very friendly to Nokia veterans. Before, sending messages would have me press one button two or three times: type the message, select the contact, confirm the number and finally send – all with one button. This time, the phone’s UI tells me to scroll down to a separate tier of icons to send a message. This adds about a second or two of your time. I eventually got used to it, but still. Why re-invent the UI if it works great?

Verdict
Whenever I review a phone I always ask myself what features would make me buy it. In this case, it would have to be the unique form factor with the small concave at the phone’s edge. Since it also comes with a 128MB miniSD card, I’d definitely use this phone to store music and work files. The phone retails for around $400.00. A bit steep, yes.

  1. Hi Jayvee,

Nice review, but I have one correction: Nokia 6270 is not a Series 60 (=S60) device, it is a S40 device with a new UI.

So the answer to your question “Why re-invent the UI if it works great?” is – we didn’t. :)

  2. Jayvee says:

no wonder the UI looked like an in-between. i stand corrected here.

but it really did look s60ish. and that, i think, is a good thing.

i want to know how to switch message memory from internal to external in nokia 6270 and if no then how do i recive a large memory file via bluetooth on my phone as there is only 10mb internal memory in nokia 6270 pls help
    thanks!!!

  7. Gigabytee says:

    hay,
    Same as kaushik…

I recently got the nokia 6270, i was trying to receve video files via bluetooth, the phone writes the files on a folder in the internal phone memory (12mb), Unlike the 6600 & other older phones i canot use my Memory Card (128mb) to store messages or bluetooth receved files. after receving the file i have to manually move it to a folder in my SD memory card, and for some reason i canoot mark the files in the receved folder i have to move them one by one!!.

So at the moment i cannot receve large video/audio files.

Does anyone know how to save files on to the memory directly??

How to get the data transfered through bluetooth to be directly saved on the memory card.

  12. Shavir says:

The default memory for IR/ Bluetooth files receiving is the phone memory. For larger files you would have to use the USB data cable. Bummer huh?

It is high time nokia or somebody developed a software to correct this problem of not able to receive large messages directly to the memory card. After all, it is a smart phone. It sure would accomodate that software.

I am problem in big size data trasfer using bluetooth. I am having an external memory of 1 GB but still the received files comes in the phones memory which is not sufficient for stroing more than 5MB. If any solution then please let me know?

  20. Raju says:

Nokia 6270 is 40 series platform Mobile so you can’t expect those Facility those you can get through Nokia 60 seies Platform mobile phone like Nokia 6630,6670,7610,6681..etc and all new “N Series” Mobiles.
So any person who any time has used any Nokia 60 series mobile will never purchase it.
    Big Disadvantages:
**You can’t Select Multilple files to transfer them to any ohter mobile or from phone to memory card and vice-versa.

**It can’t support large variety of softwares that a series 60 mobile can support.

**You can’t run two application at a time mean to say you can’t minimize your application to switch between applications.

  37. ishan says:

i have nokia 6270 handset, the phone as such is no doubt an awsome product by nokia.the only problem i have faced is in giving path to files coming via bluetooth, directly to an external memory. since phone memory is too low to receive files those bigger than 10MB. Phone memory is also used in storing msg’s ,default ring tones, applications etc. So, there is hardly 4-5 MB space left for “received files” folder.
Also help me how to store msg’s in memory card.

Como también viene con una tarjeta miniSD de 128MB, definitivamente usaría este celular para guardar música y trabajar archivos. ” [...]
