Nokia N80 review

My good friend Dickoy was able to get his hands on the slider Nokia N80. This is a S60-based slider phone which hails from the days of the Nokia 7650. It is 3G capable and has built in WiFi. Multimedia-wise it features a 3MP camera. This phone is PACKED!

One thing I love about the N80 is the inclusion of WiFi (802.11g) capabilities. It took me several minutes to figure out how to connect the phone to our WiFi network here at home. Chalk that up due to the fact that I didn’t have the manual. Well even if I did I wouldn’t have probably read it either… I got to surf some web sites through the phone’s browser. One word… Awesome. For a phone browser the N80’s was wicked. It showed some cool features such as a preview of the whole page with a rectangle box outlining where in the page you are. It also has a mouse pointer, same as what you’d find on a desktop. Although while the browser was impressive to an extent it did crash on several sites. Still not sure why this happens though. The N80’s browser is built on Safari Webcore technology.

  1. Nice phone, How much is it?

  2. Congrats for getting your hands dirty with the device! I wouldn’t worry about crashing browser. It is not a commercial version yet.

I assume you are an innovator and a tech-god… Do you think configuring WiFi is too difficult for mainstream users?

Great phone. I want to get one once it comes out. Nokia is the best mobile phone maker out there. Also, I love your website!.

@tommi: before, friends of mine had problems connecting nokia phones (9500) to a wireless network. it turns out that there was some network incompatibility (something with the B and G networks).

but as far as usability goes, having a “wifi” button on the main screen would always be a good help.

why do you ask? are nokia users surveyed to have a hard time connecting to wifi?

  5. Just asking, since I like to hear direct feedback about Nokia’s new features and their usability. Hearing feedback from your kind of early adopters is very interesting, and often helps generating improvement ideas :)

i guess one thing id like to bring up is that the n80 looks too much like a phone to have WiFi. what do i mean? take for instance the iPAQ 4350, the BenQ P50/51 and the HTC Universal - they all seem to be able to have wireless capabilities because of the way they are built - thumb board and all.which means that it enables you to type stuff down.

surfing the net with a 0-9 keypad seems a bit strange to me. but then again, that’s something to be taken in the context that the public may still not be used to it.

the n80 looks like a phone and one would even wonder why WiFi was built in. but yes i agree that the browser renders well :) so my comment about the phone having wifi is a “first impressions” thing that could be ignored once you actually do get to try it out. :)

I also have this phone in black can you tell me whether you have Quick applications under Office? and what is your software version? Mine is dated 16th February 2006.

  8. Robert Nicholson says:

Just exactly how do you configure WI-FI for an access point with a hidden SID? Since it only lets you define access points for those it can see.

“..hails from the days of the Nokia 7650.”

    Arrggh.

This makes my phone sound so ancient. Are you telling me it’s time for an upgrade?
