Phone Service Providers: They’re all the same?

The New York Times has quoted Comscore surveys that reveal how consumers are treating phone services like the next glass of lemonade: there really is no brand preference. It’s all about price, price and price.
Is this true? For some countries, certain telco providers are still looked at as brands. And how does it explain AT&T purchased iPhones that have become unlocked to work with other telcos? Surely it has something to do with the service provider.
I agree with the study to the extent that choosing a phone subscription plan is more trivial than it was compared to two years ago. But there is still that niche audience that compare data plans versus SMS and call plans.
