Sophie from b5media’s Beauty Gizmo asks:
“Hey Nokia Boy, what’s a better phone to get? A Nokia 6120 or a Nokia 5310?”

Sophie currently owns a Nokia N95, which is way better in terms of features compared to both phones. So I figured that she was going for the form factor as both the 5310 and the 6120 boast a very slim real estate that’s very pocketable. As it turns out, her carrier is giving away free phones for I guess, her loyalty plan.

The main difference between the 6120 and the 5310 is that the latter has better audio hardware installed. With Nokia’s new naming nomenclature, anything labeled with the XpressMusic brand is meant to do really good audio playback.
The 6120 is a more conservatively designed phone that boasts HSDPA connectivity. Personally, I don’t really see the true value of HSDPA if your supporting network’s 3G capabilities suck OR you don’t really have a use for downloading huge amounts of data onto such a small phone. Choosing between a phone with HSDPA versus a laptop with WiFi, for instance – I’d always choose the latter.
Thus in terms of the total user value, I’d go for the Nokia 5310. Unless your position requires you to have an conservatively designed phone at the table, the 5310 will suffice. It also supports 3.5mm headphone attachments. This means that you can use the same headphones you connect to your iPod or other music players.

Thanks for your help Nokia Boy!
i was faced with this dilemna a few months ago. i like the functions and style of the 5310 but i need the HSDPA speed of the 6120. i would’ve gotten the latter for only S$48 (less than Php 1,500) with a plan and broadband on mobile but the 5310 looks irresistible too.
fast forward to today, i’m still hunting for my next Nokia model. however, the 5310 and the 6120 are not in my choices.
you’re welcome, beautynomist!
@reggie: what are your current choices?
Jayvee,
I blogged about it before

Nokia N95, N95 8GB, E51, E61i, E90.
If money is not an object, I’ll get the E90. But if Nokia Liam pushes through, then it’s a worthy upgrade to my trusty E61.
Hi there. Sophie, between the 6120 and the 5310, I’d definitely go for the 6120 because it runs S60 3rd Ed, which means that you can install applications just like you already can on your N95. That isn’t possible with the 5310 because it’s an S40 phone.
You might wanna look at the E51 though. It’s got a similar form-factor to the 5310, HSDPA and S60 like in the 6110, and even Wi-Fi! And for all that, it’s still pretty cheap.
But again, since you already own an N95, and I’m guessing that you just need a back-up phone for music, perhaps, then the 5310 will do.
