Reflections on Mobile Content and Social Media

The guys from Mobile Crunch report that by 2012, we will have a 25% market share for content production in the entertainment industry. Back in the day of traditional media, to become a publisher entailed investing several millions to outsource a printing press and get an editorial and sales team together.
Now, all you need is a computer. Or wait, a phone. Reflecting on this makes me realize how companies are starting to develop products that serve to act as platforms for their key competencies. Nokia puts up their Ovi Community service to support their hardware and Scoble talks about how the Kindle sucks because it doesn’t have a social networking feature.

But why start with the phone? For one, it’s what people always bring with them. Case in point – don’t you get cellphone withdrawal when you’re halfway to work and realize you forgot your phone? The mobile phone by itself is already a social networking platform without the need for additional sorts of value added services. So it seems the right place to start to connect people and lead them over to other market arenas – like the PC. SideShow for one is a good example of how your desktop can link to your mobile phone.
Companies should start continue thinking community, and find ways to expand the community across devices.
