For those of you who have been fans of Nokia and never looked back, you may have noticed a little application called “Switch” under the Tools folder. This has been an offering that came with some of the latter phones in ‘08. The Switch app lets you synchronize data between two Nokia phones via Bluetooth or data. For instance, if you have a new Nokia phone (an N86 pictured here), you can transfer all your data from your previous Nokia phone (the Nokia E71) simply by running Switch. There’s a philosophy behind the design of every Nokia technology and now they’re showing us what’s up with gesture controls. When I was sent to Nokia Connection ‘09 the only semblance of gesture control was the turning over ringing phone to turn it to silent mode. Newer phone models allow you to put your palm over the screen to automatically silence it. An additional “palm to face” on the phone sends an SMS saying “sorry I’m in a meeting — call you later.”

The video above shows how Nokia is studying gestures. Different localities have different ways of expressing feelings and a courteous gesture in one country may actually be considered rude in another. so how does gesture control really work and become ubiquitous? Well, Nokia doesn’t seem to have an answer yet, but some movements such as blowing a kiss to your phone to send an SMS to a loved one or twirling your phone around to activate a “Presence” service may be the first steps in understanding gestures and technology.
