In any case, here is a link to Hey Beautiful by The Solids. The familiar theme from How I Met Your Mother starts at the last 30 seconds of the song but with the guitars as accompaniment.

Many months ago I forced myself into an opportunity to learn how to manage my finances. What it was – a social experiment of sorts with a journalist friend who had me consult a financial planner and see whether this would bring about any behavioral change in my spending habits.

After a few meetings with my new (free!) financial planner, we narrowed down our goals to the following: to have at least 2 months salary worth of liquid income in case of emergencies, to verify my newly acquired investment insurance policy, to get independent health care (I was a freelancer) and to identify and cut on unnecessary expenses.

As of today, I’ve achieved the savings and the health care (I got Maxicare because the annual price is similar to having paid for a quarterly blood test).

As it turns out, the biggest chunk of my expenditures went to operational expenses (gas and “going out” ). Next in line was the bills (credit card, cellphone, etc). Yeah the cellphone bill was there. I computed that I spent roughly $700.00 a year for bills. One huge chunk of advice my planner gave me was that I shouldn’t neglect the small expenses because these expenses multiplied by 12 will give you a huge amount you could have saved for something. I pay less about $50.00 a month for my phone (although I haven’t bought a phone since 2003 because the retention plans I apply for always have phones). Wow, $700.00 – that’s a laptop a year!

But then again, I do need to make calls as I run my own virtual business back home. How much do you spend every month for your cellphone bill? They say that getting a wireless landline can help you save money, but that’s not available everywhere!

I’ve always meant to write about this but I keep on forgetting as it seems to trivial. But in truth, it isn’t. A long time ago I wrote a piece about the “pink” in gadgets. And the recent unveiling of Apple’s colors of the rainbow + pink marketing campaign for the iPod brings to light how much detail Apple puts to color.

I’ve never seen mobile phones exhibit such vibrant colors. And yeah, even gadgets in general.

Many years ago a cult bag brand called Timbuk2 was founded. It’s core selling points were durability, practical use, and was made fit for messengers, hence the messenger bag design is what they’re most known for. But other than that, you’d notice that unlike their competing brand, Crumpler, Timbuk2 doesn’t go for the flashy, bright colors that their competitor stresses. The thesis behind the color reservation was so that their bags don’t stand out too much, subjecting it more to theft. Crumpler, and I’m sure other manufacturers see it another way and want to flaunt their bags.

There is no right or wrong with color schemes. My question now is why don’t cellphones have such daring color choices? Big companies like Nokia segregate their phone brands for the enterprise and “fun” markets and yet in the “fun” line we don’t see a lot of “fun” colors. Motorola tried this before with their RAZR line, but none of the colors really stood out. The new iPod colors are vivid. They are bright and eye catching. Hold one in arms and immediately, people will look. They stand out like a hot cover model on the front page of a magazine amidst other so-so covers on the rack.

I think it’s only a matter of time when we’ll start seeing bolder colors. The market seems to demand it with the kids finally growing up and wanting colorful choices out of the box, and we — we’re just getting older.

Heads up! I heard Chuck Norris is coming this way!, screams the rebels as you play as Chuck Norris. Gameloft had mentioned that Chuck Norris was in a “weakened state” as he traveled around the world and got into an accident. So not like Chuck Norris, but fine, we’ll play along. But if Chuck Norris hears about this ….

Chuck Norris: Bring on the Pain is out NOW by Gameloft. It plays a side-scrolling hack and slash and shoot and gun Chuck Norris as he goes around the world cleaning up the bad guys and sending them into “Retirement +10.”

I first thought this game was fake — since no one is bad ass enough to play as Chuck Norris. But no, Gameloft is indeed releasing this epic title this month! And PROPS to Gameloft for successfully taking this cult into the next level. The dialogue is absolutely hilarious and the premise for Chuck Norris to be able to punch through buildings and burn down forests while defeating Communism is ….. well…. expected of Chuck Norris.

So I dropped my phone (yet again) square on the pavement yesterday. I had barely noticed the small chip on the front plate of my Nokia N82’s real estate due to several phone calls that came in. The calls were a huge distraction to the apparent sinking of the lower 1/3 of my phone’s keypad. This made text messaging a bitch the following day (I fell asleep inside the cab and didn’t touch my phone the entire night).

I think the way we treat our mobile phones sort of reflects the way we treat our health. I recently got a huge bout of food poisoning from my hawker experience in Singapore and it really sucked the juices off me. Any sane guy would have gone to see a doctor – but no – not me. I hung around the 3 day conference finishing off a packet of carbon pills and antacids. Holy crap (literally).

And yeah, the thing with my phone – I believe that the first fall screws up the phone, and the second fall jingles the insides back to normal. Heh. So here I am, stubborn as ever, wanting to not part with this N82, even if Nokia lent me another phone to try out. I believe that some miracle would fix the small chip on the side – maybe if it fell again on the opposite direction, it would have matching crevices. Neat-o. Talk about the fashion series.

What’s the worst damage you’ve done to your phone?
