While I’m huddled in my little archipelago awaiting the presidential elections for 2010, I can’t help but read news about how Estonia will be voting for their president using mobile phones, apart from online key in systems. It’s not the technology I’m amazed at – it’s the security and confidence the people confide to that makes this a great occasion.

Raul Kaidro, who is the spokesman of the SK Certification Center in Estonia, says that it will be easy and secure: The voters will just need to previously obtain a free authorized chip. This chip will have an encrypted digital signature, which will allow them to identify themselves and vote using a text message.

The tech to implement this isn’t the hard part. In the same way that each mobile phone has a unique IMEI number and can be tracked and disabled by telco providers, the security chip works the same way. Truly though, you’d have to assign one person to a single phone.

And how much does this chip cost?

Word’s out in the geekvine that John McCain was quoted to use the BlackBerry, but not for emails. Now I know we shouldn’t judge a guy by his mobile phone, but not using the BlackBerry for email is sorta like well … my gosh. There’s just so much analogy up for grabs.
McCain’s admission in a July 11 New York Times interview that: “I use the BlackBerry, but I don’t e-mail.

I’ve never felt the particular need to e-mail.” A statement proving the boneheaded joke of the McCain staffer to be particulary boneheaded considering the purported inventor of the Blackberry does not use the device to accomplish what it was invented to do: send emails.[Geek.com]

This quote was published in an article where McCain’s economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin stated one of those “if a butterfly flaps its wings on the other side of the world, will it cause a storm back here” lines saying that inevitably, McCain was responsible for the BlackBerry’s creation because of … economics.

[insert crickets chirping]
