iPhone Sales in China Doing Poorly

It was almost two months ago that Apple finally launched the iPhone in China, hoping to take advantage of the big market in the country.

However, what was hoping to be a successful beginning to the iPhone’s run in China, has now turned into a huge disappointment for the folks at Apple.

To date, sales in China for the iPhone have only gotten up to approximatel 100,000 units being sold. The second largest mobile operator, China Unicom, were chosen to carry the phone – a company who have about 140 million users.

South Korea’s main carrier, KT, already has 60, 000 pre-orders for the iPhone, which hasn’t even been launched there. To top it off, KT only has 14 million users compared to China Unicom’s 140 million subscribers.

Those are some really crappy sales in a country that holds about 1.3 billion residents. Hopefully, sales increase in the next few months.

“Reverb” Solar-Powered iPhone Dock Is Huge

Have you seen the Reverb solar-powered iPhone/iPod dock? It’s massive! Seriously, at three feet tall, this thing is really cool but it’s also a bit puzzling. First of all, many of us like our iPods since they are relatively tiny but can store a lot of music. They’re convenient. When you attach it to something that is the size of a pre-schooler, it becomes a lot less practical, I would think.

Still, there’s no price on being friendly to the environment, right? Unfortunately, it takes a whole 20 hours outside/40 hours indoors of sun exposure to get this bad baby up to full charge.

The one thing that irks me about my iPod is that I can’t put some batteries into it to get it to work, I’ve got to wait for it to charge and I think that having to wait for my dock to charge would drive me nuts and I’m really environmentally-conscious. Apparently, Gizmodo says that you can buy a regular power adapter for the Reverb so that could work, I guess.

The Reverb will be released in April, 2010 at a retail price of $2,229.

Heroes III for iPhone brings JUSTICE!

Heroes III (not to be confused with Heroes of Might and Magic III) for the iPhone is similar to the already famous Mafia Wars series, except that this one is well … part III of the Heroes miniMMO for the iPhone / iPod touch. After creating an account, you will be tasked to perform acts of heroism around the virtual world populated by other players. You can also opt to upgrade your skills, form alliances and battle other players online.

It’s pretty much the tried and tested mobile MMO formula with a hero’s cape clad over it.

Oh well, #pepsifail is the real thing

We can all learn a thing or two from Pepsi. The problem with big brands is that they’re so ubiquitous, you really don’t know how else to promote them with below the line campaigns. Take this latest fiasco — Pepsi had recently apologized for an iPhone app that “provided phone users with chat-up lines for “getting lucky” with 24 different types of women – including foreign exchange students and college girls.” (source)

The app objectifies women allowing you to stereotype them into different “categories” and flaunt the news to your friends through Twitter and other social media sites.

iPod or Music Phone?

I was having a conversation with a colleague in the publishing industry. We were talking about how Nokia has been trying to promote efforts for their Comes with Music brand in different parts of the world. At one point we talked about how it seems that they want to go head to head against the iPod as the choice for music. Although it doesn’t seem evident, there is truth to this as in my hypotheses, people only keep one music library — and that would be kept in their iPod.

Sure, their phones may have music but if you can afford an ipod, you’d probably buy one and use THAT for music. Besides, if your phone did everything, it would suck the life out of your battery.

Do you prefer to keep your music and phone separate? What would make you turn your phone into your primary music player?

if you’re from the Philippines, you should be familiar with Click the City: a one stop shop for movie schedules, restaurant reviews and shopping guides.. Well, if you got yourself an iPhone or iPod touch, they’re there as well.

The app makes its debut at USD$3.99, which IMHO is steep for something you can access on the Internet for free. Here’s to hoping that they do something about the price. Maybe this has something to do with the location-based-services of the iPhone. We’ll see.

Alright, this might be another set of items haling from the category of “crappy iPhone accessories.” It looks awkward, but there may be something to it. The Wrap 310 allows you to view video from what looks like 55 inches of pure awesomness. The goggles themselves are more like shades and you can even attach a pair of earphones. This kind of technology is getting less and less cumbersome to wear, which makes it a viable gift for your geeky friends this Christmas.

OMG! Snood comes to the iPhone

My dad was addicted to Snood. So was I. It was like family bonding time before Facebook came with Farm Town. Snood was a classic. It was simple, elegant and highly addicting and its now on the iPhone / iPod touch. What makes Snood more interesting is its gearing towards social media: you can opt in for a 2 player mode that connects to Facebook to challenge your friends. There’s also a WiFi challenge mode. Overall, a brilliant time waster. I just bought it.

There are games that you pay for from the iTunes store that end up being forgotten, but Snood is here to stay despite its steeper USD $3.99 price tag.
