Most definitely it was a move that had mobile phone vendors looking into their backend systems. Sony Ericsson adopting Windows Mobile in favor of UIQ
Sony Ericson CTO Mats Lindoff tells The Register that “We need products in all categories, maybe not in the ultra-low segment, but a broad portfolio. Windows Mobile in the US and in Nordic countries is the IT manager’s choice.” According to PC Magazine, The new XPERIA is making waves at the Mobile World Congress announcing this product because Windows Mobile, quite frankly has never been this sexy.

This brings to light a “mini” OS war for phones – I have this belief that at the end of the day, we’re only going to have 3 or 4 prominent operating systems including Windows Mobile, UIQ and S60 variants, the iPhone OS, and yeah, probably Palm if they get their act together. I think it’s all about how hackable these standard operating systems will become – coupled with how well these “hacks” get integrated into a custom user interface. So yeah, licensing is the way to go. Let’s do hardware and UI improvements, shall we?

Remember how Nokia revamped their user interface at the Go Play event? Well Sony Ericsson is doing the same thing with their experimental XPERIA X1. Using an iPhone-like touch screen interface, the XPERIA series is SE’s answer to the Nseries multimedia phones of Nokia. The main underlying difference is that the XPERIA, at least with the X1 is running on a modded version of Windows Mobile 6 (the same way the HTC Touch has a different home screen interface).

The home screen uses custom widgets on a grid so you can view all your personalized data on the fly in a rather elegant fashion. Specs below:

Features include:
Windows Mobile 6
3-inch wide VGA (800 x 480) touchscreen display
3.2 megapixel camera
A2DP Bluetooth
GPS
WiFi and HSDPA connectivity
microSD expansion with 400MB on board memory

The video preview of the user interface is Apple inspired, definitely. If they get this to work, there’s some serious competition – not just because of aesthetics but also due to the fact that it runs Windows Mobile.
