Cellphone9

the lighter side of 3G

When one of the three telcos here in the Philippines launched 3G as a “free until further notice” service, they invited the press over for a special luncheon as a surprise gesture. Unfortunately, not a lot of them (the press) had a firm grasp of what 3G was. Basically, as it was explained to them in simplest terms: you can now see the people whom you are talking to via specially made phones that have a second camera in front for video calling.

Now because our local tech community is very small (we see the same faces every time there’s a presscon), the general atmosphere for that day was light and informal (as goes for most of these tech press briefings).

So one of the more outspoken guys posed a complaint, rather jokingly, that now it will be much easier to prove his current location to his wife when she calls.

Him: ” Honey I’m in the office.”

Wife: “Prove it!”

So there was a group concensus that the telco should start expanding their list of 3G services to include specially made background filters which you can apply to your video calls. Some of these backgrounds include pictures of an office desk (”Honey the boss needs me for overtime”), a nondescript driver’s seat (”Damn hunny, I’m still stuck in traffic. Don’t wait up for me”), and the most expensive filter available for download would be the facade of a church (”Hunny I’m praying”).

  1. [...] Jayvee of Cellphone9 recently posted about lighter side of 3G joking about how it will make harder for husbands to lie to their wives about their location.Though this one was in good humour I recalled having read about some IITian having created a cellphone tracking technology where one can keep track of exact location of  any other cellphone, and this one did not need 3G either it was a network-operator sided technology and can be used simply via SMS.
