Use Your iPhone to Stay Fit Over the Holidays

There are so many good things about the holiday season – the gathering of family and friends, time away from work, fun and games and, of course, food. Turkey, stuffing and cranberries are delicious but it’s all the cakes, cookies and pies that can make you pack on the pounds. On top of that, there’s last minute shopping and a million other things to do so it can be hard to find time to work out.

Fortunately, if you’ve got an iPhone you might be able to use it (or an iPod Touch) to help keep you in shape. Most people will gain a few pounds during this time of year.

When serving meals, use smaller plates. Studies have shown that people eat more simply because more is on their plate. If smaller plate is used, the difference in hunger is minimal. This works with smaller bowls for soup, plates for dinner, appetizers and even deserts.
Holiday beverages such as alcohol and eggnog can add to your daily calorie intake. You can treat yourself to one glass and sip it slowly. Savor the taste and then go back to water.

Meet 50 Cent With VitaminWater’s iPhone App

If you’ve ever wanted the chance to hang out with 50 Cent, you might want to check out VitaminWater’s very first iPhone application. The cool app allows users to remix 50 Cent’s newest single “Baby by Me.”

The remixes can be submitted to a nationwide contest and 50 Cent will then choose a grand prize winner based on the submission he likes best. The winner will be flown to NYC to meet the rapper. I can only imagine how much fun 50 Cent would be in person!

The app is called “50’s Sound Lab” and the remixes can be posted on VitaminWater’s Facebook fan page, user’s personal profiles or forwarded to friends (you’ll want to brag about your skills, won’t you?!).

iPhone and iPod Touch users can download the app for free from the iTunes store http://appsto.re/50soundlab and, in the meantime, you can check out this funny video of 50 Cent talking about the cool app.

iPhone Helps With Fear of Flying

A lot of people miss out on traveling since they suffer from a fear of flying but a new iPhone application might be able to help them calm their nerves and get on a plane. I honestly never thought of a phone being used for something like this but I think it’s a great idea.

Virgin Atlantic Airways has launched an app for its Flying Without Fear course proving yet again that Virgin Atlantic president, Richard Branson, is on a mission to accomplish just about everything he possibly can in life.

“Our first iPhone app will bring the benefits of our successful Flying Without Fear course to millions of people around the world who are now using mobile technology to make their lives better,” Branson said. “The app will put many travelers at ease and enable them to prepare for their first Virgin Atlantic flight.”

The app features an introduction by Branson and then offers a number of resources to users including relaxation exercises and an in-flight explanation of a flight. I’d love to see what this looks like even though I’m not really afraid of flying.

The Flying Without Fear course boasts a 98 percent success rate which is pretty flipping impressive. The app was developed in collaboration with Mental Workout, “a company developing software to help people resolve issues and increase mental performance.”

iPhone: 20-Minute Cooking with Jamie Oliver

If you think about it, it’s not really expensive. Jamie Oliver has 50 new 20-minute recipes all tucked into your iPhone. I’ve been looking for a handy cookbook for grilled stuff and after searching the bookstore it really just dawned on me that it makes tons more sense to buy eCookBooks, especially those that have step by step videos and and photos. Jamie Oliver is one of the better ones and it is priced decently.

Pocket Whiteboard for iPhone

The only thing that sucks balls is the fact that a notepad app like this should have been stock material for the iPhone. There have been numerous occasions when I would have wanted to jot down notes without the need of the virtual keypad, and Pocket Whiteboard is exactly what we’re looking for.

You’ll soon find yourself out of space when you start doodling: you can change the color of your marker, replay your work stroke by stroke and save your art in raw format.

Oh well, #pepsifail is the real thing

We can all learn a thing or two from Pepsi. The problem with big brands is that they’re so ubiquitous, you really don’t know how else to promote them with below the line campaigns. Take this latest fiasco — Pepsi had recently apologized for an iPhone app that “provided phone users with chat-up lines for “getting lucky” with 24 different types of women – including foreign exchange students and college girls.” (source)

The app objectifies women allowing you to stereotype them into different “categories” and flaunt the news to your friends through Twitter and other social media sites.

Blackberry Widget SDK announced

It’s out! Although in beta. BlackBerry is sure stepping up, not to be left behind by Nokia and Apple. The BlackBerry Widget Packager 1.0 Beta allows developers to pack all their developing goodness into a little widget which they can export.

There’s a conference for this — on November 9-12, RIM will be holding a session for developers who want to develop apps for the Blackberry platform. You can also proceed here for more details.

HP iPrint Photo prints photos wirelessly

This week, HP unveiled their new line of four wireless “Magic Frame” printers for the consumer market in Asia. In tandem with this, they’ve also released an iPhone application that allows you to directly print photos from your iPhone or iPod touch. Neat right? Well, the app was released in December of 2008 so it really has been a while! This is the perfect app (perfect as it is the ONLY app that will work in tandem with an HP wireless printer) for printing photos from your iPhone / iPod touch via WiFi.
