It’s been spread as a viral video for a Novascotia tourism campaign many months ago, but the Pomengranate is making a huge comeback, especially in Asia. I guess it took this long to arrive. What’s actually freaky is that one of these features — the projector is already available on a number of Asian made phones. The NS08 (which stands for Novascotia ‘08) is still a dream, but it does become less and less fascinating by today’s standards in mobile phone technology.

Here are a few things up for the testing grounds according to the devs:

* New Portrait QVGA UI designed for remote controls
* New Universal driver for Windows SideShow that supports USB and Bluetooth communication
* New Simulator that uses the Universal driver
* New user switching UI for devices operating in the assigned user mode
* New Bluetooth menu commands
* Support for Danish, Finnish, and Norwegian languages

Gee. Although SideShow works with mobile devices with two screens, there has to be a way to link it up to your mobile phone to view pertinent information. Since SideShow uses gadgets, I guess an upgrade to the WM OS would allow support for these.

“Early next year Barclaycard will run a trial of the technology on the back of its new ‘OnePulse’ contactless card, which was launched in September. OnePulse cards are combined credit cards and Oyster cards, and also allow small purchases (under £10) to be made without entering a Pin.

About 1,000 retailers in the capital are already equipped with the contactless terminals for OnePulse, so putting the technology into mobile phones will not require them to install yet more expensive kit. Several hundred Barclaycard customers will be issued with compatible phones supplied by Nokia, which has been pushing the technology for several years. [Textually]

Honestly, I feel that this is a neat concept that is highly dependent on the culture of the society. For instance, although online purchases are quite common nowadays, there is a certain charm to lining up for Black Friday sales. Nonetheless, the adoption of mobile phones as pay methods is not new. However, there has to be a mindset change on the fact that if you lose, your cellphone, you lose more than your address book. Risky, ain’t it?

Marrying the ovehead projector and the cellphone, this Windows Mobile powered smartphone concept brings a lot more to the table, literally.

And if it costs much less than $500.00, then this can very well replace your board room projector. Of course, the concept leaves you with many questions. Your mobile phone would probably only support USB connectivity in the first place – and secondly, how would the phone control heat from the “bulb?”

Nonetheless, this concept brings a lot of excitement to portable presentation tools.

Like take these phone fingers for instance. Not only do they double as Halloween paraphernalia (hey kids that’s in two weeks time!), they also make for good precision wear for booger picking.

Here is a quick tip on how to get her number in four easy steps:

Step 1

Back in 2001, the “in thing” was having a mobile phone with Bluetooth and a personal digital assistant. The latter allowed you to keep schedule, listen to music and view photos while your phone simply allowed you to send away text messages. You could sync both devices wirelessly, and this was the beginning of how the industry juggled OTA sync tools. My personal favorite config was the Nokia 6310i with the Palm m515 and a Bluetooth SDIO card.

Now, Apple had just announced the iPod touch, a niche market product that heavily capitalizes on the iPhone sans the calling and camera features. You can use it to browse the Internet via WiFi and watch music and videos. With the coming of the iPod touch, is Apple slowly trying to bring back the dawn of device pairs once more? But then, before you even try to answer that, I’d like to dare a suggestion – is Steve Jobs trying to revive the Apple Newton?

The Apple Newton was a PDA device that was too early and advanced for its time. It was so advanced, CNET did a feature on how it fared against a Samsung Q1. UMPC. It was scrapped and replaced for more consumer friendly products like the desktop Macs, Powerbooks and iPods.

In 1997, Palm had a 66 percent market share, Windows CE had 20 percent, and Newton just 6 percent, according to market research firm Dataquest. At the height of its popularity, only an estimated 200,000 Newtons were in use.

Apple finally killed the Newton in February 1998 after Steve Jobs returned to the company, even though fans demonstrated in the parking lot of Apple’s Cupertino campus. Apple officials gave them coffee and cookies but refused to resurrect the device. [source]

Here is why I think the Newton revival can be a possibility. Apple’s core competence doesn’t have anything to do with mobile phones and the telco industry. Amidst the hulabahoo of the exclusivities with AT&T and the unlocking phenomena of the iPhone, Apple stands to win more market share by releasing an iPhone that does more without the calling feature. Leave the phone manufacturing to the Nokias and the BlackBerry guys and concentrate on coming up with “Apple-centric products” (no more dealing with third parties). This seems to be the direction of two other companies: the Palm Foleo (the next version) as well as the ASUS eee.
