Here’s a detailed explanation on how to run your Wordpress blog on a Palm Pre. Palm is Linux based so it should be fairly easy for someone to get the hang of this given some familiarity with the OS. You will be using Optware Lighttpd and MySQL server and will have to secure shell within the Palm Pre device.

The Palm Pre’s sharp edge can be used to cut cheese. It’s not in the instruction manual, but who reads it anyway? Of course the cheese cutting technique will be available as well for the GSM / UMTS version.

Yesterday, Leo Laporte called Mike Arrington out for implying that he’s giving positive reviews of the Palm Pre because he was sent a review unit (Arrington’s TechCrunch staff apparently had a reserved slot for a unit as well).

The argument runs deep into the core on the question of integrity and the lending of demo units. It makes me think back on the number of demo units I’ve received (sadly I can’t afford to buy them all) and returned after the lending period. I looked over the box where I keep these things and I found a Motorola RAZR which Moto hadn’t bothered to get back after trying to return it to them. I think it’s because they closed the mobile division last year and didn’t really care much for it anymore. Oh well.

But yeah, this Leo and Mike bit. At least they’ve mended fences.

All because of the Palm Pre.

The Palm Pre is looking good in time for its June 6 launch. Unveiled, the Pre’s drive mode allows for the sncing of DRM free music to iTunes which means you CAN start using the Pre as an iPod. No word about syncing other items like Audiobooks, but we’re sure Apple won’t be allowing DRM enabled music from their iTunes store.

In a few days we will finally get to experience a mix of nostalgia and excitement over what you have in store. It’s been TOO LONG, Palm Pre. We thought you’d come out in a much larger form, calling yourself the Foleo, but apparently after months of R&D, you got scrapped for a smartphone. It’s been too long, Palm Pre. Everyone else took after your simplicity (well except Windows Mobile), so we’re hoping to see you set a great standard for everyone else.

What’s even cooler is that if you’ve been building legacy apps for the Palm OS back in the day, the new SDK allows you to export the PDB files from your old apps into the new webOS making migration much faster!

Palm’s new webOS will include an emulator that allows users to run legacy applications from the Palm OS. Looks like great stuff coming for the Pre and the new operating system. The Classic operating system looks pretty neat, but it also takes advantage of the new processors to run apps faster on the Classic OS emulator.

Pictured above is the Palm Centro. It was supposedly the Palm OS’ last stand molded to fit the hands of fresh grads who wanted a powerful device that was hip as well as affordable. But Palm had a streak of bad luck half caused by user perception and the “Palm is dead” syndrome. Palm is thus convincing everyone to adopt the new webOS which debuts with the Palm Pre.

I guess there’s some allusion to 2009 being Palm’s “Easter Year” where it dies to resurrect into something completely new. The upcoming webOS looks amazing. Yes it does feature some iPhone like functions but I honestly think Palm’s comeback should go in this direction if it wants to survive.

Long live Palm.

Whoa. I just realized that it’s been a while since I tagged something under the category of “Palm.” With Palm’s competitive absence from the mobile scene for the past three years, Apple’s iPhone has rightfully taken the place of the world’s most easy to use smartphone OS. And behind them, Windows Mobile still retains its niche as being the “geekier” trade. But Palm’s comeback looks promising, amidst the apparent infringement into how the new Palm OS looks a lot like the iPhone’s. Can’t blame Apple. But yeah, I can’t blame Palm either.

The latter has long been wanting to reclaim its place – a place that’s been obviously occupied by Apple. And from the initial looks of the OS, we’re seeing something simply amazing. There are so many questions – availability within Q2, compatibility with legacy apps, pricing, a GSM version .. the list goes on. But as someone who’s followed Palm’s rise to the development of the Handspring, I must say that these guys might be doing something right, finally by simply sitting and watching what everyone else is doing.

2009 might be the year for Palm. But I honestly think that it is more like the year of the OS that adopts something close to an idea of “open apps” where developing one app for Palm OS 2 allows it to be compatible with Android, Windows Mobile, and Apple as well. It’s a far, far idea. But really, that’s what happened with Open Social.
