The concept reminds me much of high school kids in class passing notes to one another. But instead of writing notes in secret and passing them to seatmates, all they need to do now is scribble using their mobile phone. It’s as simple as that. Use the phone like a pen to scribble letters. I think the setup works like a combination of the Wiimote’s accelerometer from Nintendo and maybe, in the future, the Canson Papershow which I reviewed several months back. Yeah, there’s a name for this new technology and it’s called Air Writing.

Stay tuned, folks! The application is currently in prototype with existing phones with a built in accelerometer.

So it comes with GPRS connectivity, but yeah if you’re looking for a phone that works for about USD $100 — it even has an extra removable battery — then you might want to check out a few of iPhone clones that are coming out. There’s a WiFi version of the same clone for twice the price which is still a steal considering the fact that it even has dual SIM capabilities.

Other than those I mentioned, it has everything the iphone has and probably even more coz it comes with an extra battery, you can download Apple apps in it, comes with 1 GB memory card, it’s dual sim (put in your Globe, Smart and/or Sun sim if you wish!), comes with a leather Apple case and did I tell you you’ll save around P38,000 with it too (you can already buy a decent laptop with that money or maybe even go to Hong Kong or Thailand or Bangkok!)? So yeah, I got myself one. I’ve yet to discover if I’m gonna regret it, coz like I told you I’m no geek. But for P5k, it’s already very much worth it.

The unit is called a Sciphone, and it looks hot. There is something oddly alluring with phones like these because there’s such a big community built around it. Interesting, actually.

Do you experience the same issues? I heard that congested networks are a myth. There’s always enough bandwidth, it’s just that someone’s stepping on the pipe. And this is the reality for most service providers. It seems a little unfair when you’re dealing with a “virtual commodity.”

But such is life. So before the networks get congested, here’s a happy greeting towards 2009 from me to you!

Yup. Samsung is making an attempt to grab the record for fastest text messaging while free falling from the sky.

Samsung Telecommunications America, (Samsung Mobile) a leading mobile phone distributor in the U.S., attempted to establish the Guinness World Record for “Fastest Text Messaging While Skydiving.” A team of professional skydivers text messaged while freefalling from 12,000 feet outside the Los Angeles city limits at the Samsung Mobile XTREME TEXTING event. The team of 10 skydivers used a variety of Samsung Mobile messaging phones during this challenge, including the Samsung Propel(TM), Samsung Gravity(TM), Samsung Rant(TM), Samsung Alias(TM) and Samsung Messager(TM). Samsung Mobile created XTREME TEXTING as a unique way to promote its new lineup of text messaging phones.

“Fastest Text Messaging While Skydiving” will be a new entry into Guinness World Records database if successfully attempted. It will join the current record for “Fastest Text Message” currently held by Jeremy Sng Gim (Singapore), who typed the prescribed 160-character phrase on his mobile phone in 41.40 seconds on February 24, 2008.

Remember back in the 90’s when the Guinness Book was more interesting for accounting omnibus achievements? Nowadays, the records seem to be more niched. What next? Fastest text messaging while taking a dump?

The record is not official, but will be submitted for approval to the Guiness Book.

Mobile phone screens are getting bigger and bigger. The challenge is to figure out how to integrate it into a brick. Just like these weird concepts that push mobile real estate to creative limits, Nokia’s latest patent allows some creative fusion between the touch screen and button keys, reminiscent of the Sony Ericsson P series.

The challenge is to create a widescreen mobile phone that goes over the top in terms of design. The sliding keyboard concept is so 2008, apparently and in ‘09 we might be seeing some new calisthenics for phone hardware. The patents are self explanatory.

Flickr user Gregory Hull has taken a photo of a dog with an iPhone costume oh (well I can’t assume its his dog).

The same thing goes for Scott Edwards. But it’s on him, not his dog.

Why is the iPhone such a popular costume to don? It could have been any other model, but landing on the iPhone as a choice costume has that preconceived iconic “thing.” It’s like Dracula or Frankenstein – the phone has been raised to a pop culture phenomenon.
